Northeast takes Phila. wrestling title

Mike Siravo brought a little something with him when he took over as Northeast's wrestling coach in 2007: a league championship.

The Vikings dominated from 140 pounds through heavyweight and dropped visiting Edison, 45-26, to win their first Public League wrestling title yesterday.

"We're all really excited about it," Siravo said. "We've been focusing on this. The kids went out and did the job. We have 23 kids on the team who are committed to the program."

One of those kids gave Northeast the lead for good in the second bout of the day. Rich Kreamer pinned Carlos Cordero at 140 pounds in 5 minutes, 8 seconds to give the Vikings a 6-3 lead.

Ariel Brito actually set the tone in the first match when he lost to Ivan Bolden at 135 pounds, 7-6.

"In the [regular season], Brito got pinned," Siravo said. "Tonight he lost a decision. Everybody got fired up after that."

Northeast beat the Owls during the regular season, 38-33, but won eight straight bouts between Kreamer and Anthony Nieves' 5:58 pin at heavyweight.

"We've been solid in the middle all year," Siravo said. "The match started at a good weight class for us."
