Penn Charter girls post first-round rout

Penn Charter's girls' basketball team faced a familiar opponent in the first round of the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Tournament and met with a similar result yesterday.

The fifth-seeded Quakers rolled to a 62-40 win over visiting Mercersburg Academy, getting 25 points from sophomore forward Aleesha Powell.

Mercersburg Academy, the No. 12 seed, was led by Caroline Lovette's 19 points.

The teams met over the holidays in the Make-A-Wish Tournament, with Penn Charter winning by a 47-29 score.

Brianna Butler, a guard, added 10 points and six assists, and 5-foot-8 forward Kendall Stokes had 13 point and 10 rebounds.

Penn Charter travels to Shipley tomorrow (4:30 p.m) for a second-round date.

Shipley, the No. 4 seed, received a bye in the tournament. The Gators own a six-point win over Penn Charter in the regular season.

Host Westtown placed four starters in double figures, led by Doc Walker's 23 points, in an 84-60 win over Solebury School in a Pennsylvania Independent Schools Tournament first-round game.

Tri-County. Perkiomen School got some outstanding production from its backcourt of Teddy Goodman and P.J. Daniels in a 76-63 win over visiting West-Mont Christian.

The Indians (17-10 overall, 12-3 league) got 22 points from Goodman and 15 more from Daniels.

Chuck Paul had 27 points to lead the Wings.

Nicole Gatto rolled an even 600 series to lift Archbishop Ryan into the Catholic League girls' bowling semifinals yesterday.

The Ragdolls topped St. Hubert by 2,191-1,946 in a league quarterfinal.

Gatto had games of 210, 166 and 224.

The win propelled the Ragdolls into tomorrow's semifinals at Thunderbird Lanes (Holme Circle) against Cardinal O'Hara.

O'Hara, which did not make the playoffs last year, advanced to the semifinals with a 1,939-1,875 win over Archbishop Wood in the other quarterfinal.

Little Flower, the winner of the regular-season title received a bye into the championship round and will face the O'Hara-Ryan winner.
