Bartosiewicz, Morlack both third in state bowling

John Bartosiewicz of Washington Township came close to perfection at the pinnacle of his competition, rolling a 299 in one round, before finishing third yesterday at the NJSIAA state boys' individual bowling championships held at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick.

Sami Morlack of Burlington Township took third place in the girls' competition.

Bartosiewicz, a junior, was the fifth and final qualifier for the stepladder finals, where he proceeded to knock off the fourth- and third-place bowlers before falling, 259-193, to the eventual state champion - Korrie O'Hanlon of Keansburg.

Morlack, who qualified second, was ousted in the semifinals by South Brunswick's Kayleigh Kimberlin (175-165), who went on to knock off top-seeded Jen Brzozowski of Toms River East in the finals.

Tri-County. Senior center David Follis grabbed 10 rebounds scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, when host Clayton went on a 29-10 run to finish off GCIT, 72-40. Ken Johnson scored 18 for GCIT, which trailed by one at halftime.

Burlington County. Quron Pratt (15 points), Kyle Sheppard (12) and Warren Oliver (10) combined for 26 points in a 38-22 second-half comeback that made Palmyra a 55-45 winner at Holy Cross.

Nonleague. Host Willingboro (14-7) continued its recent hot streak, claiming its 10th win in 11 games, by rallying past Winslow Township, 58-50. Terrell Maloney scored nine of his 15 points to key the Chimeras' 28-19 fourth-quarter surge. Shawn Valentine's 15 points paced the Eagles.

Markese Tucker got off to a fast start, scoring 12 of his 16 in the first half, to put host Trenton Catholic on course for an 85-51 rout of West Windsor-Plainsboro South.

Girls' Basketball

Senior Amber Spady drained three shots from beyond the arc, establishing Westampton Tech's single-season record with 40 three-pointers, in a 59-48 home win over Burlington County League rival Bordentown.

Brittanie Payne (28 points) and Spady (13) led the attack for Tech (16-6), which extended its winning streak to five. The Scotties got 12 points from Melanie Bakeman and 10 from Emily Lawson.

Tri-County. Host Clayton took its first lead of the second half on a steal and layup by Chavonne Shepherd with 1 minute, 30 seconds remaining, and the Clippers held on to upend Glassboro, 33-31.

Boys' Swimming

Brett Pederson of St. Augustine won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke events in dominant fashion and the top-seeded Hermits followed suit, routing No. 5 seed Holy Cross, 122-48, in a NJSIAA South Jersey Non-Public A semifinal.

Pederson's time of 1 minute, 53.87 seconds in the 200 free was nearly two full seconds ahead of the runner-up, and his 1:06.03 was more than three seconds faster than the second-place swimmer in the 100 breaststroke.

South Jersey Non-Public B. In a sectional semifinal that came down to the final event, Gloucester Catholic's quartet of Patrick Malone, Eddie O'Brien, Joe Lafferty and Sean McCall delivered a clutch victory in the 400 freestyle relay to lift the third-seeded Rams over No. 2 seed Bishop Eustace, 88-81.

Malone (200 IM, 100 backstroke) and McCall (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly) each won a pair of individual events in the meet, which was held at Camden County Tech.
