Prep Charter tops Freire in semifinals

Prep Charter's second-half start proved crucial in a 67-58 Public League semifinal basketball win over Freire Charter last night. Raven Jones scored nine of her game-high 23 points during a 17-10 run that helped the Huskies take control in the game, played at Engineering and Science. Jones, a 5-foot-6 guard, added 11 rebounds.

Prep Charter moves a block away to the Liacouras Center tomorrow for the league championship game against Central (6 p.m.).

Pa. Independent Schools. Star guard Devon Kane might be gone, but Notre Dame hasn't forgotten how to win.

The Kane-less Irish found their way to a 46-37 Pennsylvania Independent Schools basketball quarterfinal win over visiting rival Episcopal Academy.

Kane, who hurt her knee last week, is out for the season and her next serious basketball won't happen at least until she arrives at Villanova University in the fall.

Meanwhile, point guard Meghan McCullough, a junior, took over some of the scoring load with 13 points, seven assists and four steals.

Bridget Borgese, a 5-foot-9 senior forward, made five of her six shots from the field and finished with 11 points and four rebounds.

Fiona Flanagan also had an impressive line with nine points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals.

In other quarterfinals:

Friends' Central rolled to a 67-43 win over visiting Hill School.

Sophomore point guard Monaye Merritt had a hand in four players reaching double figures, as she distributed 11 assists to go along with her 14 points.

Kristen Mann led the way with 16 points and Erica Bash added 14 while Talia East chipped in with 13 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Penn Charter upset host Shipley, the Friends' Schools League playoff champion, 48-46, in overtime as the Quakers survived three close-in shots in the final 6.3 seconds of overtime to pull out the win.

The game was a rematch of an earlier encounter won by Shipley, 64-57.

Aleesha Powell led Penn Charter with 20 points, while Brianna Butler had seven points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Germantown Academy rolled past visiting Springside, 58-20, as Maggie Lucas scored 17 points.

District 1 Class AAAA. In a second-round game, Caitlin Vasey scored 16 points to lead Suburban One Continental champion and No. 7-seed Central Bucks East past visiting and No. 10 Perkiomen Valley, 48-44.

Suburban One American Conference champion and top-seeded Cheltenham thumped rival Norristown, 68-24, getting 18 points from Shayla Felder and 15 more from Monet Constant. Danya McCrewell added 11 points, 12 rebounds and six steals for the Panthers. Cheltenham closed out the game with a 19-2 run.

In a battle between Ches-Mont League teams, visiting Downingtown West upset No. 6 Great Valley, 43-36, as Jessica Beswick scored 15 points. The No. 11-seeded Whippets also got 12 points from Amanda Donia and 12 rebounds from Kelly Coker.

Third-seeded Council Rock North got 10 assists from freshman point guard Lauren Gold in a 55-36 win over No. 14 Methacton.

Second-seeded Downingtown East placed four starters in double figures, led by Ro Gentry's 14 points, in a 50-35 win over visiting and No. 18 Bensalem.

District 1 Class A. In a first-round game, host Calvary Christian held Friends Select to no free throws and got 22 points from Maddy Hoffman in a 39-35 win. The Cougars shot 14 for 22 at the line.

No. 10-seed Sacred Heart overwhelmed host and No. 7 Morrisville, 59-23, behind Alex Kemble's 10 points.

Sixth-seed and host Phil-Mont Christian got 15 points from Montana Mitchell and 15 from Ticora Adams in a 58-31 win over No. 11 Bristol.

Dayna McCrewell, a senior guard-forward, has been a versatile performer for the Panthers.

6. Archbishop Wood (6) 19-5

The Vikings will square off against Archbishop Carroll

in the Catholic League final Monday at the Palestra.

7. Council Rock North (8) 21-2

Sarah Kiely and the Indians claimed the Suburban One League National Conference crown.

8. Notre Dame (7) 22-7

The Irish will play out the rest of the season with injured Devon Kane in mind.

9. Mount St. Joseph (9) 23-1

The Magic begin play in the PIAA District 1 Class AAA tourney tomorrow against Radnor.

10. Lower Merion (10) 22-2

The Central League champions knocked off Council Rock South, 40-28, on Tuesday.
