Roman Catholic scrapes by Carroll
Andre Horne helped the Cahillites get to the Catholic League with an overtime win.
They're back.
After a one-year absence, the Roman Catholic Cahillites are back in the Philadelphia Catholic League championship game.
Roman secured that by taking a 63-59 overtime victory over Archbishop Carroll in last night's semifinal at the Palestra.
Aided by Andre Horne's heroics in the extra period, the Cahillites (17-7) will make their third championship appearance in four seasons. Roman will face Neumann-Goretti on Monday at the Palestra.
The victory also marked Roman's 13th consecutive victory over Carroll (21-3). The Patriots' last series victory over their former Southern Division rivals came Feb. 22, 2002.
Roman can thank Horne and Kevin Regan for extending the winning streak.
Horne, a 6-foot-1 freshman forward, scored six of his 12 points in the overtime. He final two points of the game clinched the win.
Horne's foul shot with 8.3 seconds left in overtime gave Roman its four-point margin of victory. Carroll misfired on a three-pointer in the closing seconds.
Regan, a 6-3 junior forward, finished with a game-high 24 points. Standout sophomore Juan'ya Green scored six of his 13 points in the overtime.
Kasheef Festus' layup gave Carroll a 22-16 advantage with 3 minutes, 8 seconds left in the second quarter. But a foul shot by Rakeem Brookins and a basket by Regan pulled the Cahillites within three points (22-19) with 1:02 before intermission.
Cahillites point guard Maalik Wayns missed his seventh game with a a meniscus tear in his right knee. The McDonald's all-American will meet with his doctor Monday. He scheduled to return for the Class AAAA state playoffs - if not sooner.
