Quakertown tops 20-team field

Quakertown's Nick Lubenetski knocked off top-seeded Joe Kent of Norristown with a first-period pin to win the 152-pound title and the Outstanding Wrestler award last night in the PIAA District 1 Class AAA North wrestling championships at Quakertown.

Lubenetski, seeded second, stopped Kent in 1 minute, 59 seconds to complete a string of three straight pins on his way to the title. The Panthers also took the team title in a 20-team field.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to next weekend's Southeast Region tournament at Oxford.

Class AAA Central. Great Valley and Boyertown had three individual winners apiece, but Great Valley added three second places and two thirds on its way to the team title at Spring-Ford.

Dom DeRobertis (145), Carl Buchholz (215) and Casey Haines (285) prevailed for the Patriots, including Haines' pin in 1:18.

Boyertown's Matt Malfaro took the Outstanding Wrestler award by edging Unionville's Joe Bonaduce, 10-9, in a 119-pound thriller.

Andre Petroski, a 189-pounder from Springfield (Delaware County) grabbed the Outstanding Wrestler award with an 8-6 decision over Council Rock North's Jamie Callender.

Harriton's Dan Levin, seeded fourth at 140, beat top-seeded Pat Sabatini of Bristol, 1-0, in the semifinals. He then claimed the title and the Outstanding Wrestler award with a 9-4 verdict over Octorara's Brandon Christianson.

District 12 Class AAA. La Salle took the team title and Frankford's Anthony White was named the Outstanding Wrestler in the competition at Edison.

La Salle piled up 232.5 points, and Frankford was the top team from the Public League with 74 points and a fifth-place finish.

White, one of three individual winners from the Public League, won at 135 with a 7-5 decision of La Salle's Joey Mazzi. La Salle had five individual winners.

The top four finishers in each weight class advance to next weekend's Southeast Region tournament.

National Prep Schools. Germantown Academy's Pat Owens captured the 125-pound title with a 4-2 decision over Blair Academy's Garrett Frey at the national prep championships at Lehigh University.

Owens, a junior who was top-seeded in his weight class, finished the two-day meet with a pin, a technical fall, and three decisions en route to the individual trophy. The Patriots finished seventh in the team scoring in a 123-team field, trailing team winner Blair Academy.
