S. Jersey Girls: Ocean City opens tourney with win

Ocean City opened defense of its South Jersey Group 3 girls' basketball title with an overpowering performance last night, as the top-seeded Red Raiders dispatched No. 9 seed Delsea, 46-26.

Senior forward Kelly Brady - who single-handedly outscored the Crusaders 6-5 in the third quarter - led the way with 16 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Junior guard Kelsey Boylan chipped in a dozen points and senior point guard Sarah Gibbs came through with seven points, six assists and five steals. Stephanie Krauss had 13 points for Delsea.

Next up for Ocean City is a sectional semifinal at home tomorrow against No. 4 seed Deptford.

In other South Jersey Group 3 quarterfinals:

Shawnee's 34-30 win over No. 3 seed Seneca will send the sixth-seeded Renegades into tomorrow's semifinal at No. 2 seed Manchester Township. Kira Maier scored four of her six points to fuel Shawnee's 10-4 stretch run. Seneca's Chelsea Grover scored 13.

Host Manchester Township advanced with a 62-59 victory over seventh-seeded Timber Creek. The Chargers mounted a late rally behind Alexis Riff (18 points).

South Jersey Group 1. Kaylee Conner's 18 points topped five Gloucester scorers in double figures, and the senior guard's 10 points in a 26-15 fourth-quarter blitz lifted the top-seeded Lions over No. 9 seed Glassboro, 65-55. Stephanie Gardner had a game-high 21 points for the Bulldogs.

Senior guard Shalisa Hill had a strong all-around game, producing 20 points, nine assists, eight steals and six rebounds, and senior forward Kaitlynn Shawaryn contributed 15 points and nine rebounds, as No. 3 seed Penns Grove ran away from sixth-seeded Riverside, 61-36, in a quarterfinal.

South Jersey Group 2. Haddon Township completed a three-game season sweep of Collingswood, as the top-seeded Hawks eliminated the eighth-seeded Panthers, 56-43, in a quarterfinal.

Sophomore guard Jess Brown picked up 10 of her 18 points in a 23-12 second-quarter spree, allowing Township to wipe out an early four-point deficit. Lauren McCutcheon added 11 points for the Hawks, while Danielle Trucksess scored 18 for Collingswood.

Haddon Township, which beat Sterling by 10 points in the teams' previous meeting this season, will host the fourth-seeded Silver Knights in a semifinal tomorrow.

South Jersey Non-Public A. Sophomore guard Taneshia Mobley scored 12 of her 18 points in the first half, fueling a 32-17 start that propelled No. 2 Holy Spirit to a 53-28 quarterfinal rout of seventh-seeded Notre Dame.

Serifat Junaid scored 18 for fourth-seeded Camden Catholic, which fell, 49-44, to No. 5 seed Red Bank Catholic.

Central Jersey Group 1. Junior forward Molly Fitzpatrick connected on three shots from beyond the arc in scoring 14 points, and No. 3 seed Florence used a strong start and some clutch foul shooting to defeat sixth-seeded Highland Park, 48-41, in a quarterfinal.
