Pa. Boys: Candelaria hits 1,000th as Girard College wins
Girard College junior guard Torrell Candelaria picked the perfect stage to score his 1,000th career point. Candelaria collected 16 points and helped boost the Cavaliers past Camp Hill, 85-76, to open the PIAA Class A state basketball tournament last night at Colonial Elementary School in Plymouth Meeting.

Candelaria finished the game with 1,005 points for Girard (22-4), the District 1 champion. Camp Hill came into the tournament as the No. 4 seed from District 3.
District 12 champion Math, Civics & Science got 15 points from Ramone Williams and slipped past Church Farm, 48-44, at St. Joseph's Prep.
Jeff Lord added 14 points and 10 rebounds against the Griffins who came into the tournament as the No. 3 seed from District 1. The Mighty Elephants are 22-5.
PIAA Class AAA. Kasheef Festus and D.J. Irving each scored 20 points to lead Archbishop Carroll past District 1 champion Phoenixville, 56-50, in a first-round game at Norristown.
Festus scored 10 points in the third quarter for the Patriots (23-3), who came into the tournament as the No. 3 seed from District 12.
District 1 No. 3 seed Holy Ghost Prep utilized a balanced scoring attack to beat District 3 runner-up Wyomissing, 54-44, at Governor Mifflin Intermediate School in Shillington.
Mike Byrne led the way with 15 points for the Firebirds (17-11).
NCSAA National Tournament. D.J. McFadden came through with 17 points for International Christian and the Titans downed Imani Christian School, 72-61, in a second-round game in Erie.
Wrestling
Josh Smith of Octorara is the only District 1 Class AA representative at the PIAA championships, and he is making his presence known at the Giant Center in Hershey.
Smith pinned Shane Stark of Lake-Lehman in 4 minutes, 35 seconds to win his quarterfinal match at 171 pounds, then beat Logan Shirey of United in the semifinals, 3-2, to reach today's final against Caleb Kolb of Grove City.
Smith opened the tournament on Thursday with a 13-0 win over Ryan Burnheimer of Westmont Hilltop.
In Class AAA, Zac Haynes of Council Rock North won his quarterfinal bout at 119 pounds.
Also winning in the quarterfinals were Kyle Bove of Kennett at 135 pounds, Ed Shupe of Council Rock South at 160 pounds, Hunter Smith of West Chester Henderson at 171 pounds, Andre Petroski of Springfield (Delaware County) and Jamie Callender of Council Rock North at 189 pounds, Scott Syrek of Owen J. Roberts at 215 pounds, and David Osei of Abington at heavyweight.
