Villa Maria Academy could not hold on to its first-day lead in the PIAA girls' Class AA swimming and diving championships at Bucknell University and finished fourth after yesterday's final events. But none of the Hurricanes was unhappy.

"I said earlier that I would be very, very happy to finish in the top five at states - and we did," coach Cathy Hay said after her team scored 135 points to edge Fairview for fourth. Oakland Catholic won the title with 181 points. Radnor (87) finished seventh.

Hershey ran away with first place in Class AA boys' meet with 214 points, followed by Shady Side Academy with 114. Lansdale Catholic was the only area boys' team to make the top 10, finishing eighth with 55 points.

Villa trailed Fairview by two points in the team standings and needed to place higher in the final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay, to move into fourth place. The foursome of Julia Wisler, Christine and Megan Garvey and Julianna Rava took fifth place in 3 minutes, 37.95 seconds. Fairview was seventh.

"I'm so excited. It's just great to have the best finish in school history at states," Christine said.
