Souderton, the District 1 Class AAA girls' champion, picked up two gold medals and a record yesterday but trailed Emmaus and Hershey in the team standings after the first day of competition in the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Emmaus had 143 points at the end of the day at Bucknell University, followed by Hershey with 1131/2 and Souderton with 1111/2. North Penn was eighth with 52 points and Upper Dublin 10th with 44.
On the boys' side, St. Joseph's Prep, competing in its first state championship, grabbed three individual gold medals. Greg Mahon won golds in the 200 individual medley (1 minute, 48.31 seconds) and 100 butterfly (48.13 seconds), both in record time. Matt Belecanech won the 200 freestyle (1:36.05), also in record time.
Souderton set its record by winning the day's closing event, the 200-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Missy Doll, Chloe Thomas, Angela Severn and Paige Whitmire covered the distance in 1:33.16, breaking the old mark of 1:35.33 set last year by Wilson of West Lawn.
Whitmire just missed a PIAA record in winning the 50 freestyle. The Indians senior was timed in 22.83 seconds, .03 off the mark shared by two swimmers.
