Malvern wins as Young steals home - twice

Young's first steal, in the third, produced one of two runs in that inning. His second, in the fourth, gave the Friars their final run.

The two stolen bases were half of Young's total for the day. He finished the day two for three at the plate.

Pioneer Conference. Pottsgrove rallied from a 13-1 deficit to beat visiting Phoenixville, thanks to eight walks issued by Phantom pitching. Rick Manzo's pinch-hit double in the seventh inning tied the game and Ian Hahn's single drove in Manzo with the winning run.

Mark Romano's eighth-inning double produced the final run of the game for Methacton in an 7-6 win over Boyertown.

Nonleague. At Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater (Fla.), Rob Amaro went 3 for 3 with a home run over the 340-foot sign as Penn Charter hammered St. Francis Xavier (Canada), 14-5.

Softball

Melissa Kulp capped Upper Merion's rally by scoring a go-ahead run in the sixth inning of a 5-4 Suburban One American Conference win at Cheltenham.

Kulp scored from third on a fielder's choice, sliding in just ahead of the tag by Cheltenham Cheltenham catcher Danni Schwartz.

Ches-Mont. Stephanie Pritchard needed a 10th-inning run to pitch Octorara past visiting Sun Valley, 1-0. Christine Michalski's single drove in the winning run for Pritchard, who allowed just four hits over her 10 innings of work, striking out 12 and walking none.

Pioneer Conference. Becky Ellis stroked a single to score Rachel DeLuca with the eventual winning run for Methacton in a 7-6 win at Boyertown.

Bicentennial. Dana Schnitzel's three-run home run highlighted a six-run fourth as host Phil-Mont Christian took the lead for good in a 15-11 win over Calvary Christian.

Nonleague. Amanda Fernandez pitched a five-inning one-hitter, striking out seven, for host Nazareth Academy in a 10-0 win over Central Bucks East.

Kelsey Detweiler pitched a three-hitting for host Pennridge in its 3-1 win over Lansdale Catholic.

Rachel Mintz's grand slam closed out the scoring in the sixth inning for host Upper Dublin in a 12-4 win over Gwynedd-Mercy Academy. Amy McCaffrey also homered for the Cardinals.
