Thomas, Ley are tops at Woodbury Relays

A sophomore and a junior earned the most-outstanding- athlete awards yesterday during the 37th annual Woodbury Relays.

Camden sophomore Adrian Thomas won the award for his leadoff role on the victorious 4x100-meter, 4x200 and 4x400 teams, all of which broke meet records.

Kingsway junior Chelsea Ley won the Kathy Shields trophy as the anchor of the winning 4x800 and sprint-medley relay teams. Ley also anchored the distance medley relay team that placed second to Highland.

Camden won the boys' team scoring in Group 2 with 40 points. Kingsway won Girls' Group 3 with 52 points.

Ley looked at her trophy with appreciation as she held it in her right arm.

"I feel very honored," the distance runner said. "This is the first time I've won it.

"We hoped to come out strong, and we worked well together. I was really pleased with our times. I ran my best of the season."

Liz Locke, Liz Faulkner, Jenel Smith and Ley were clocked in 9 minutes, 53.1 seconds in the 4x800. Kayla Green, Leslie Miles, Ulil Emore and Ley ran the sprint medley (200, 200, 400 and 800) in 4:25.2.

Kingsway's time in the distance medley was 12:33, a meet record bettering the 12:37.6 posted by Bishop Eustace in 1996. But Highland won in 12:29.9.

Thomas was without his plaque because a teammate playfully had run away with it.

"I ran a great pop-off leg in the four by two, caught everyone in front of me in the staggered four by one, and I ran a good four-by-four leadoff," Thomas said.

Thomas, Cordeno Nix, Syteek Farrington and Clive Harriott were clocked in 1:30.4 in the 4x200, bettering Pleasantville's 2008 meet record of 1:30.5.

Thomas, Terry Alston, Harriott and Farrington won the 4x100 in 42.3 seconds, breaking Pleasantville's 1994 meet record of 42.7

Thomas, Harriott, Jamil Henry and Tyrie Webb ran the 4x400 in 3:25.4, breaking Haddon Heights' 1977 meet record of 3:28.8.

In the boys' competition, Glassboro placed first with 46 points in Group 1, Timber Creek won Group 3 with 41 points, and Absegami took the Group 4 title with 38 points.

The top girls' team in Group 1 was Haddon Heights with 50 points. Camden won Group 2 with 58 and Columbia captured the top spot in Group 4 with 52.
