Pa. Boys: L. Merion advances in tennis

Top-seeded Lower Merion dropped only three games in three singles matches, winning all in straight sets, in beating visiting Unionville, 5-0, in a District 1 Class AAA first-round match yesterday.

The Aces got a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 from Coby Kramer-Golinkoff and a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles from Matt Savarn. Robby Kay won his third-singles match by a 6-1, 6-0 score.

In the only second-round match of the day, host Radnor advanced with a 5-0 win over Strath Haven. Andrew Zhong was leading Adam Salam, 6-5, at first singles when Salam had to default due to injury.

Class AA. Dave Canfield and Brad Stotesbury came through with all eyes on both teams watching them as Springfield (Montgomery County) edged New Hope-Solebury, 3-2, in a first-round match. At first doubles, Canfield and Stotesbury outlasted the Lions' first doubles' team of Weston Bloomer and Lars Kristiansen, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to clinch the last match off the court.

Baseball

Tim Freiling's three-run double in the sixth inning rallied unbeaten Northeast (9-0) past visiting Washington, 3-2, in a Public League game.

Freiling delivered in the sixth after Washington grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth.

Fred Jones drove in four runs to lead host Dobbins past Randolph, 16-1.

Michael Cavellaro got the win on the mound and homered for Central in a 15-0 win at GAMP.

Host Germantown hammered Fels, 17-2. O'Shane Black went 2 for 3.

Inter-Ac. Matt Lengel scattered six hits over seven innings, striking out nine and walking none, as host Haverford School topped Episcopal Academy, 3-0. Lengel and teammate Rick Troncelliti both had solo home runs in the fourth inning. EA's Brian Ruditys gave up three hits.

Penn Charter got a complete game from Kenny Koplove and a three-run homer from Rob Amaro in a 7-1 win at Chestnut Hill Academy. Amaro's blast was a liner over the left-center fence in the first inning for a 3-0 lead.

Central. Mike Delaney had three hits and four stolen bases to lead host Springfield (Delaware County) past Marple Newtown, 5-4. The Cougars broke a 4-4 tie on Joe Ciavarelli's single in the bottom of the seventh.

Pioneer Athletic. Tim Mayza retired the first 13 batters he faced to pitch host Upper Perkiomen past Phoenixville, 3-0.
