Lavong brothers each win 2 medals at Pioneer meet

Methacton's Carlton and Wesley Lavong did not disappoint spectators at the Pioneer Athletic Conference track and field championships as each went home from Boyertown with a pair of individual gold medals at the Pioneer Athletic Conference track and field championships.

But the real drama was provided by a scintillating finish in the boys' 800 meters. Perkiomen Valley's Vince Perozze held off Phoenixville's Joel Flott to win the event.

Perozze, who also took the 3,200, covered the 800 in 1 minute, 58.99, ahead of Flott's 1:59.31. Perozze was also part of a Perkiomen Valley 1-2-3 sweep in the 3,200.

Carlton Lavong won the long and triple jumps, while Wesley Lavong took the shot put and discus.

In the girls' competition, Phoenixville's Courtney Kedra won the 100 and 200 meters, and took the long jump.

Sean Gentry paced the Knights in the boys' meet, winning the high jump at 6 feet, 6 inches, the long jump at 22-5, and the triple jump at 44-21/4.

Ayanna LeBlanc's wins in the shot put (37-73/4) and javelin (122-8) topped five North Penn athletes who won gold medals. Central Bucks East's Ali Gillen won the 400 (57.52 seconds), 300 hurdles (43.47), and triple jump (36-9).

Upper Dublin's Mike Palmisano broke the five-year- old meet record in the 1,600 meters with a winning time of 4 minutes, 19.16 seconds in the league meet at Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Cheltenham produced two meet records in the girls' competition, winning the 4x400 relay in a record time of 3:20.57, and getting a record 40-foot, 91/2-inch shot put from Dayna McCrewell.

Wissahickon cruised to the boys' team title, and the host Colonials prevailed in the girls' meet.

Notre Dame used a couple of impressive performances from Maura McKendrick and Ann Kelly to run away with the team title yesterday.

Kelly won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, setting a meet record with her 45.96 in the 300 hurdles. The meet record was 46.14 set by Germantown Academy's Devon Blount in 2007.

Notre Dame went 1-2 in the 100-meter dash, with Maura McKendrick posting an impressive time of 12.26 to beat teammate Ayanna Fields (12.52).

The 3,200-meter record was broken by Agnes Irwin's Courtenay Devlin, who ran an 11:45.61.

Scott Fenton hit a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, to power West Chester Henderson to a 14-4 Ches-Mont League win at Bishop Shanahan. Fenton's blasts came in consecutive innings, a three-run shot in the third followed by a slam in the fourth.

At St. Josph's University, Kimmy Keating's five goals and three assists powered Merion Mercy past Villa Maria, 15-14, for the Association of Catholic Academies championship.

It was the third title in the last five years for the Golden Bears, who dethroned last year's champs in the process. Merion Mercy last won the title in 2007.

Casey Rooney and Emily Corcoran each added three goals for the Golden Bears (15-4), who had to hold on for the win after leading, 15-12.
