S. Jersey Boys: Seneca's Kanz high-jumps 7-foot-1

Seneca high jumper Drew Kanz improved his personal best by five inches when he cleared 7 feet, 1 inch yesterday in winning the event at the 71st annual Burlington County Open at Maple Shade.

Kanz, who won four events, broke the meet record of 7-0 set by Willingboro's Mike Morrison in 2003 by clearing the height on his third attempt. His mark ranks No. 6 in state history.

The Golden Eagles standout also won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.64 seconds, the long jump at 20-103/4, and the triple jump with a 43-8 effort.

In other highlights, Shawnee's David Forward shattered the meet record in the 3,200 with a time of 9:21.12, and Lenape's Ryan Garvin won the 800 (1:55.64) and 1,600 (4:24.80).

Colonial. Haddonfield distance runners Jonathan Vitez and Ben Potts ran away from their competition on their home track at the league's all-star meet.

Vitez won the 1,600 meters in 4:31.1, and Potts took the 3,200 in 9:38.2, beating teammate Colin Baker (10:01.0).

Tennis

Lenape's Nikola Kocovic knocked off Cherry Hill East's Ross Silverberg, 6-3, 6-2, and claimed the singles title at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships at Haddon Township.

Kocovic, a junior, advanced to the final with a 6-2, 6-3 semifinal win over Egg Harbor Township's Keith Goldstein.

Colonial. Haddonfield's Matt Chalkley won the league's singles championship at Haddon Township with a 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) battle against Sterling's Dan Pfafman.

Baseball

Cherokee scored 10 third-inning runs but needed a run in the sixth to edge Williamstown, 11-10, in a Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic quarterfinal at Deptford.

Nick Allen and Eric Barbieri homered in the third. Williamstown, which got a home run from Brandon Porter, plated two runs in the seventh inning but left the potential tying run on third base.

Olympic. Senior catcher Nick Caputi drove in four runs, including a three-double in the fourth inning that broke open a close game and sent Eastern past visiting Paul VI, 10-3.

Cherry Hill West's Kevin Bordner ripped a two-run double in a four-run first inning, sparking a 6-4 win over visiting Shawnee.

Cape-Atlantic. Ed Charlton hit a two-run homer in a 4-for-5, four-RBI performance that highlighted St. Augustine's 13-9 win at Absegami.

John Huff, Alex Wallace, and Kolya Stephenson combined to pitch Ocean City's 5-1 two-hitter against visiting Oakcrest.

Buena pitcher Brandon Bakley fanned a dozen Wildwood Catholic batters during a 10-2 triumph over the visiting Crusaders. Joe Cifaloglio led the Chiefs' offense with a single, double and three RBIs.

Lacrosse

Kingsway dominated its NJSIAA State Group 3 tournament play-in game with a 15-1 rout of visiting Bergen Tech.

Ed McKernan scored four goals and assisted on another, while Frank Magazu, Kyle McCloughlin, and Troy Gentile chipped in with two goals apiece. Goalie Greg Herman made seven saves, putting the Dragons in the opening round against Montgomery on Wednesday.

Cherry Hill West also grabbed a first-round berth with a 6-5 play-in win over visiting Brick Township.

Group 2. Jeremiah Bailey had a goal and an assist, but Ocean City's playoff run ended with a 9-3 loss at Hopewell Valley.
