St. Augustine captures 5th tennis title in a row

Freshman Matt Monroe, who spent most of the season playing doubles, provided the clinching point with a third-singles win as St. Augustine beat Christian Brothers, 3-2, yesterday at Monsignor Donovan and claimed its fifth straight NJSIAA South Jersey Non-Public A boys' tennis championship.

Monroe, who moved to singles last week, posted a 6-4, 6-2 win, joining Chas Berenato at first singles and Brandon Lawrence and Aidan Kaye at first doubles with wins for the Hermits (19-1).

South Jersey Group 1. Wins by Jake Wyshinski and Bryan Bodine at first and second singles propelled Pennsville past Pitman, 3-2, in the final at Deptford.

South Jersey Group 3. Brandon Greenwood outlasted Shawnee's Tyler Arsenault, 7-5, 7-5, at third singles, steering Moorestown (20-2) to the section crown with a 5-0 shutout of Shawnee at Eastern.

South Jersey Non-Public B. Moorestown Friends won its first sectional title since 1999, 3-2, over Sacred Heart at Washington Township's Atkinson Park.

Baseball

Cherokee had just three hits vs. visiting Washington Township, but one was a two-run homer by Shane Lynch in the sixth inning that provided a 2-1 victory in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 tournament.

Tri-County. Gloucester Catholic coach Dennis Barth, in his 16th year, reached 400 career victories as the Rams beat visiting Kingsway, 13-0.

Steve Bruno hit a long two-run homer that cleared the church on Route 130 across from the field, and Nick Core doubled twice.
