Track and Field

Individual victories by Damiere Byrd, Saliym Starkey, Montez Blair, and Matthew Huckabee carried Timber Creek to the boys' Group 3 team title at the two-day NJSIAA South Jersey championships at Buena.

Ocean City's Brett Johnson sped to a time of 4 minutes, 18.51 seconds in winning the 1,600, and Seneca's Drew Kanz won the high jump (6 feet, 10 inches) and high hurdles (14.59), and placed second in the long jump behind Blair's 22-51/2 effort.

In Group 2, Syteek Farrington's 23-111/2 long jump highlighted Camden's team victory by 13 points over Haddonfield. The Panthers' Clive Harriot won the 400 (49.31) and anchored the winning 4x400 relay, while Haddonfield's Colin Baker captured the 800 (1:56.27) and 1,600 (4:22.04) runs.

Girls. Assante Johnson's triple-gold performance in the sprints paved the way for Camden to run away with the Group 2 girls' championship.

Johnson won the 100, 200 and 400-meter, while teammate Victoria Clark took first in the 100 and 400 hurdles. Marielle Hall of runner-up Haddonfield was impressive in winning the 1,600 (4:53.88) and 3,200 (10:52.32) runs.

The girls' Group 3 crown went to Seneca, as Michelle Brown prevailed in the 100, 200 and 400 and anchored the Golden Eagles' victorious 4x400 relay.

Kingsway's Chelsea Ley ruled the distance runs, taking a close battle in the 1,600 and winning the 3,200 by more than 25 seconds.

Sean Cohen's lead-off single in the fifth inning spoiled a perfect game bid by Kevin Casey, but Cohen was the only Moorestown Friends batter to reach base in a 12-0 loss at No. 3 seed Bishop Eustace in the NJSIAA South Jersey Non-Public B quarterfinals.

Casey struck out 11 in caging the sixth-seeded Foxes.

The Crusaders banged out 15 hits, with Greg Brodzinski going 3 for 3 with three RBIs, and home runs by Chris Branigan and Ken Fetchko.
