Goodbye, Burlco/Olympic American.
Goodbye, Tri-County Royal.
Hello, West Jersey Football League.
Hello, superconference.
This season marks the end of an era in South Jersey football. Next season, teams from the Burlco/Olympic, Tri-County, and Mercer County-based Colonial Valley will join together to form the West Jersey Football League.
The new league will have 66 teams. There will be 12 divisions of five teams and one division of six teams.
Most traditional rivalries will be maintained, as divisions will be set with regard to school size, geography, and history. Most traditional Thanksgiving Day rivalries will be maintained as well.
But there will be some notable changes, as one projected division has Tri-County schools Clearview and Williamstown along with Olympic schools Cherry Hill East, Cherry Hill West, and Winslow Township.
Another projected division has the three Black Horse Pike Regional schools – Triton, Highland and Timber Creek – together with Kingsway, Delsea and Cumberland.
Ewing athletic director Bud Kowal, the chairman of the new conference, said the divisions won't be set until after enrollment figures are finalized in late October or early November.
Kowal said each division will be named, with an eye toward maintaining tradition: The WJFL Freedom, for example, as well as the WJFL American, National, Patriot, Royal, Classic, and so forth.
Here are the projected divisions:
