Ridley High School senior Cameron Gunter made an oral commitment Monday night to play for the Penn men's basketball team.
The 6-foot-8 post player also received interest from the Maryland-Baltimore County, Northeastern, Holy Cross, and Cornell.
"I just felt like it was the right decision on and off the court," Gunter said.
He was lured by Penn's rich basketball tradition and strong academic standards. And playing in the Big Five was a bonus.
"I'm very happy and excited for Cameron," Ridley coach Keith Heinerichs said. "I think it's a great decision not only for basketball, but academically it's a good decision that will affect his future."
Gunter made up his mind on an official visit to Penn this past weekend. After returning home, he canceled this weekend's scheduled visit to Holy Cross.
"I didn't want to keep Penn waiting," he said. "I kind of felt like that was where I wanted to go."
Gunter averaged about 11 points and seven rebounds for Ridley. He has played organized basketball for only four seasons.
"I think Cameron has a lot of potential," Heinerichs said. "I think he will do well. He's come a long way."
