Meghan Burns: Haddonfield tennis' secret weapon

She's the No. 2 singles player on the No. 1 girls' tennis team in South Jersey.

Still, junior Meghan Burns is something of Haddonfield's secret weapon.

"Sometimes I think people tend to overlook Meghan," Haddonfield coach Jeff Holman said.

Burns was 31-8 at No. 3 singles last season. But while the addition of standout freshman Taylor Ng has resulted in other players moving down in the lineup, Burns has moved up.

After what she described as "extremely stressful" challenge matches, Burns earned the No. 2 singles spot. Taylor Ng is the Bulldogs' No. 1 singles player, while her sister, junior Spencer Ng - who won 40 matches last season at No. 1 singles - is No. 3 singles.

Junior Martha Theodoris, who won 32 matches last season at No. 2 singles, is playing No. 1 doubles with sophomore Catherine Senopoulos.

The result appears to one of Holman's strongest teams in his 34 years as the Haddonfield girls' coach. The Bulldogs are 15-0. They won the Moorestown Classic for the first time since 1990, and beat perennial powers Moorestown and Cherry Hill East by 5-0 scores.

"We have great chemistry on this team," said Burns, who is 12-0.

The annual Camden County tennis tournament in singles and doubles will be held today and tomorrow at Eastern.

Taylor Ng is the No. 1 seed in singles while defending champion Spencer Ng is the No. 2 seed.
