Two Burlington County League schools pulled off first-round upsets of Tri-County Conference favorites yesterday as Moorestown and Burlington Township advanced in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 boys' soccer tournament.

Visiting Moorestown, seeded No. 11 in the 16-team field, eliminated No. 6 seed Delsea, 3-0. Quakers goalie Tommy Hand needed just five saves to earn the shutout.

Unassisted goals by Pablo Zegarra, John Tanglienti and Jacob Dowiak in the first 21 minutes provided enough offense to send the Quakers into the quarterfinals.

In other Group 3 action, 13th-seeded Burlington Township dealt host Kingsway, the No. 4 seed, a 1-0 defeat on the strength of Christian Montemore's goal.

Brendan Stringfellow provided the assist for Montemore 10 minutes into the game, and Falcons goalie Mike DiPaola had three saves.

Visiting Cumberland, seeded No. 12, also notched an upset, disposing of fifth-seeded Timber Creek, 4-1. Mike Ordille's two goals joined single goals from Keith Karol and Jacob Morales to fuel the Colts' offense.

Seneca's Mark Steen had a throw-in headed by Kent Dimmig, setting up Dan Eiding's volley for the first goal in a 4-0 win over visiting Ocean City. Shea McGee scored the last two goals.

South Jersey Group 4. Rob Humes' goal made Winslow Township (10-9-1) the biggest upset winner of the day with a 1-0 stunner at second-seeded Eastern (11-5-3).

Riquan King's pass to Humes set up a run down the sideline that resulted in a right-footed shot from 20 yards out that found the upper corner of the net five minutes into the second half. Pat Raletz, the goalie for the 15th-seeded Eagles, made five saves, including a stop on a point-blank shot.

Top-seeded Clearview survived a scare from No. 16 Cherokee, using a goal by Jake Williams with four minutes left to beat the visiting Chiefs, 2-1.

Williams and Cherokee's Dave Schlatter traded goals, setting the stage for Williams' game-winner on a volley off a corner kick by Rich Henry.

Millville's Mitch Grotti had a goal and an assist, and Nick Braida and Zach Kranefield chipped in with a goal apiece in a 3-0 success against visiting Mainland.

Goals by Rocco Gambino and Giovanni Tacconelli steered Lenape into the next round with a 2-1 win over visiting Southern Regional.

South Jersey Group 2. Buena's Tyler Callahan broke his own school record for assists by a goalie in a season, as his third assist this fall combined with his six saves to lead the Chiefs' 8-0 triumph against visiting Overbrook.

Stevan Austino led the Buena win with four goals and Dom Crowell had three.

Jay Casey headed in a rebound off a penalty kick by Chris Murphy 10 minutes into the game as Haddon Township slipped past visiting Glassboro, 1-0. Goalie Mickey Skabla made 17 saves.

Haddonfield beat visiting Collingswood for the third time this fall, 3-0, with goals by Billy Balton, Taylor Gulbins and Rob Schlitt.

Haddon Heights stifled visiting Pleasantville, 3-0, with single goals by Billy Dollarton, George Gans and John Hagerty.

Rob Grisko scored both goals for Sterling, including the game-winner that deflected off a defender, as the Silver Knights tripped visiting Middle Township, 2-1.

Middle's Brandon Anderson tied the game with a 30-yard free kick early in the second half. Grisko's winning goal came after his 12-yard shot was knocked down by the goalie, but bounced off a defender into the goal.

Jake Perry's hat trick and Kevin Brockway's 14th shutout highlighted West Deptford's 4-0 shutout of visiting Bridgeton.

Willingboro needed Archie Biawogee's goal from Charles Van Sciver with 2:50 left in overtime to get past visiting Rumson-Fair Haven, 4-3.

South Jersey Group 1. Visiting Penns Grove, the No. 12 seed, ousted fifth-seeded Salem, 1-0, in the first round, avenging a 2-1 regular-season loss to the Rams. Brett Lockbaum scored off an assist by Miguel Rodriguez.

After splitting a pair of regular-season matches with Woodbury, host Gateway won the important third meeting, 2-0. Danny Pietroforte knocked in a goal in each half, including the game-winner from Steve Clark in the 18th minute, and Josh Schmidt was sharp in goal with eight saves.

Pat Seiler scored off Chris Schwear's assist in the ninth minute, and Rick Meleta added an insurance goal 16 minutes later, powering New Egypt's 2-0 win over visiting Point Pleasant Beach.
