Freshman and sophomore power
Tennis was a young girl's game in South Jersey this season.
Player of the year Taylor Ng of Haddonfield is a freshman. She went 40-5 at No. 1 singles for the No. 1 team in the state.
Cherry Hill East sophomore Jamie Silverberg and Woodstown sophomore Lindsey Kayati probably were the next two best players in South Jersey.
Two other sophomores, Holy Spirit's Adrienne Kaye and Moorestown's Emma Allen, were named to the first-team all-South Jersey team by the tennis coaches association.
Silverberg went 33-3 and led an inexperienced Cherry Hill East team to a surprising 19-3 record. Silverberg also was the only South Jersey player to defeat Ng this season, scoring a three-set victory in the final of the Camden County tournament.
In two other matches, Ng defeated Silverberg.
Kayati went 30-3. She won the Tri-County Conference's Diamond Division title and advanced to the finals of the South Jersey Invitational Tournament, as well as the round of 16 in the state singles tournament.
"She had a fantastic year," Woodstown coach Jesse Stemberger said of Kayati. "She represented South Jersey tennis admirably, specifically Salem County. She continues to improve every day. I'm looking forward to seeing what she can accomplish next year."
