Runners Dovell, Fanz win Tropea awards

Brooke Dovell of Timber Creek and Philip Fanz of St. Augustine have been awarded the inaugural Bonnette Ross Tropea Group Scholarship Awards for excellence in cross-country and academics.

Brooke Dovell of Timber Creek and Philip Fanz of St. Augustine have been awarded the inaugural Bonnette Ross Tropea Group Scholarship Awards for excellence in cross-country and academics.

Recipients must be seniors who plan to compete in cross-country in college. Each award winner receives $1,000.

The scholarship is awarded by the Bonnette Ross Tropea Group, a financial services group that has followed and supported South Jersey cross-country for more than 30 years.

Dovell is a member of the National Honor Society and ranked first in her class academically. In cross-country, she earned first-team all-Olympic Conference honors while placing fourth in the South Jersey Group 3 meet.

Dovell hasn't chosen a college and said she is applying to several. Among courses of study she is considering are math and environmental engineering.

Fanz won the South Jersey Parochial championship this season and placed 20th in the Meet of Champions in a school record time of 16:14. He has maintained a solid B average in school.

Fanz also is sorting out his college choices. Like Dovell, he said he was surprised to win the award.

"I wasn't expecting something like this," he said. "It's a great honor."
