North Catholic upends La Salle

The North Catholic boys' basketball team is getting hot at the right time of the season, heading into the Catholic League playoffs.

After starting the season with a 5-10 record, the Falcons have won five straight games to get back to the .500 mark, capped by yesterday's 61-46 upset over visiting La Salle in a Red Division matchup.

Despite losing guard Woody Redding to an injury in the second quarter, the Falcons avenged an earlier five-point loss to the division champs as Mike Terry (19 points) made 8 of 10 foul shots in an 18-9 fourth quarter, and Redding's replacement, Benny Birch, had four points and six rebounds.

La Salle's Troy Hockaday posted 12 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.

Also in the Red Division, second-place Roman Catholic edged visiting St. Joseph's Prep, 56-52, with five three-pointers by Rakeem Brookins (27) and eight rebounds by Kevin Regan (17). Prep's Joe Nardi had a career-high 31 points.

Monsignor Bonner topped visiting Cardinal O'Hara, 56-43, and will clinch a playoff berth if it beats North Catholic today. Keefer Francis had eight of his 19 points in the final period to secure the victory.

Father Judge's 55-49 win at Archbishop Ryan left Ryan needing a North win over Bonner to tie Bonner for the last playoff berth. Reggie Charles scored 10 of his 21 points in a 19-10 fourth quarter for Judge.

Catholic Blue. In the final game in Cardinal Dougherty's gym, the Cardinals knocked off Conwell-Egan, 61-52. Jamal Nwaniemeka, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, provided 11 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, and Brandon Brown had 14 points and 10 boards.

Kennedy-Kenrick, which will also close at the end of the school year, lost its final basketball game, 59-56, in double overtime to visiting Lansdale Catholic. For the Crusaders, Mike Barr scored a career-high 31 points, including four of his teams' six in the second extra period.

Archbishop Wood dealt visiting West Catholic a 56-46 setback as Joe Getz contributed 25 points and six steals, and Fran Dolan dealt six assists.

Erin Shields (29) hit two baskets and went 8 for 8 at the foul line in the fourth quarter to rally Archbishop Carroll from a two-point deficit to a 64-59 Catholic League win at Archbishop Ryan.

Brenna Coll's nine points topped 11 Cardinal Dougherty scorers in a 69-32 triumph over visiting Kennedy-Kenrick.

Victoria Arnao's seven rebounds and Christine Verrelle's 14 points guided Archbishop Wood past host Conwell-Egan, 59-27.
