One Rappo brother still chasing Pa. wrestling title

If it's March, it must be time to add to the Rappo family trophy case.

With four PIAA Class AAA state wrestling titles already residing there, the Rappos arrived at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa., to make it two more. Only one brother is still alive for a state crown.

Council Rock South junior Matt Rappo pinned in his first bout at 125 and advanced to today's quarterfinal round. Golden Hawks sophomore Billy Rappo wasn't as fortunate, losing in the first round at 103 pounds.

Matt Rappo pinned Nolan Barger of Clearfield in 5 minutes, 2 seconds.

Billy Rappo lost to Austin Miller of Hempfield, 10-0, and dropped to the consolation round, where he pinned Nick Bogacki of DuBois in 2:41.

Winning state titles is almost a Rappo birthright. Rick Rappo, an assistant coach at South, won the school's first state title at 103 pounds in 2004. Mike Rappo took titles at 119 pounds in 2005 and at 130 pounds in 2006, and Mark Rappo won at 103 pounds in 2008.

At the end of the first day of competition, the Golden Hawks were in third place with 13 points. La Salle was in eighth place with nine points.

Methacton's Brandan Clark had a big day, beating defending champ Nate Gaffney of Connellsville, 6-2, at 215 pounds.

In Class AA first-round bouts, Nate Ronan of Octorara beat Zak Newton of Penn Cambria, 6-4, at 189 pounds, and Josh Rogers of St. Pius X downed Jeff Meier of Forest Hills, 10-6, at 215 points.
