There were few surprises as the District 1 Class AAA team tennis tournament got under way Monday.

Conestoga remained undefeated after easing past visiting Spring-Ford, 5-0.

The Pioneers swept the singles competition in straight sets and got a win from Brendan McShane and Tim Faber at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7).

In other first-round action:

Two freshmen led Wissahickon past visiting Lower Merion, 5-0.

Thomas Vernier won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3, and Auggie Peterson-Horner teamed with senior Jason Kramon to win at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 7-6 (7-0).

Unionville got a three-set win at No. 1 doubles and downed visiting West Chester Henderson, 4-1.

Josh Knight and Logan Moore won for the Indians, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Pennsbury got a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles from Jason Hyman and Dash Brown and slipped past visiting North Penn, 3-2.

District 1 Class AA. Karl Hillier was tested at No. 3 singles but posted a 6-3, 6-4 win and helped Holy Ghost Prep beat visiting Phoenixville, 5-0, in the first-round.

Jake Leiberman took a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles as Lower Moreland beat visiting Springfield (Montgomery County), 4-1.

District 12 Class AAA. La Salle's Christian Lutschaunig earned a spot in the PIAA Class AAA tournament after winning the District 12 individual title at Awbury Recreation Center.

Lutschaunig dropped Roman Catholic's DeSean Fennell, 6-4, 6-0, to win the title.

Baseball

Thanks to Ryan Christman, Pottsgrove will not go winless this season.

Christman drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Falcons past visiting St. Pius X, 3-2, in a Pioneer Athletic Conference game.

Ryan McMenamin singled, stole second, and scored on Christman's hit.

Public. Percy Allen scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning and handed Overbrook an 11-10 win over visiting Bodine.

Derrick Gibson knocked in a pair of runs to lead Lincoln past host Franklin towne Charter, 6-4.

Adam Hoskins and Gabe Buchanan each drove in a pair of runs to lift Central past visiting Frankford, 15-9.

Catholic Red. Kevin Conroy hit a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning and Father Judge went on to beat visiting Roman Catholic, 7-6.

Central. Jimmy Mulvihill belted a two-run single and later scored on an error in the first inning to lead Upper Darby past visiting Haverford High, 3-2.

Joe DeCarlo hit a three-run homer and earned the save as Garnet Valley handed Marple Newtown its first loss of the season, 6-4.
