The St. Joseph's Prep and Mount St. Joseph Academy rowers were all smiles at the end of Saturday's 84th Stotesbury Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill. For the Mount, tears of joy - and two team members tossed in the drink - were also part of the celebration.

The Prep captured gold in the boys' varsity eight, beating crews from Washington and Florida, with a clocking of 4 minutes, 16.51 seconds. The Mount took top honors in the girls' varsity eight, holding off fellow locals Merion Mercy and Radnor, in 4:57.00.

It was the Hawks' second crown in three years and sixth in the last 12. Washington's St. Albans (4:19.97) and Winter Park (4:20.30) were second and third, respectively.

"We don't put an emphasis on being first at the beginning of the race," St. Joseph's Prep coach Jim Glavin said of his crew's slow start in the final. "We go hard in the middle. That's where we want to win the race."

Glavin is in his second year as the Hawks' boss. The 1965 Prep grad formerly was a freshman coach at the Mount, where his daughter, Emilie, 24, rowed.

"I'm trying to instill in these boys an absolute love for rowing," Glavin said. "Each and every one of these guys has committed themselves to be winners on and off the water."

The Hawks' boat, which took over in the last 650 meters, consisted of coxswain Lou Lombardi, Dean Hill, John McGrorty, Patrick McGlone, Brendan Courtney, Steve Lezynski, Colin Kane, Brendan Adams, and Carter Law.

Mayor Nutter, on hand for the finals, is a 1975 Prep graduate. He high-fived the winners on the dock. "That was a great feeling, absolutely," he said. "They did very well. There was an extra sense of pride for me."

The Mount, which had a best time of 4:49.63 in Friday's qualifying round, outdistanced Merion Mercy (4:58.23) and Radnor (5:01.53) for its first title since 2006. Bishop Eustace, of Pennsauken, had won in each of the last three years.

Mount St. Joseph's victorious boat included coxswain Sarah Jordan, Vicky Babson, Chierika Ukogu, Katy Gregor, Darian DiCianno, Laura Pospisil, Mary Duff, Dana Lerro, and Meredith Bracken.

"These girls were absolutely determined," Mount coach Meg Kennedy said. "They showed a lot of maturity in the qualifiers, semifinals and finals."

The Mount St. Joseph's girls also placed first in the junior eight, lightweight eight, and second eight.

South Jersey's Egg Harbor Township gained three gold medals, winning the boys' varsity four and lightweight four, and girls' varsity four.

Said Egg Harbor boys' coach Zach Palombo: "We have a small program. I have about 30 kids on my active roster. Our parents have to struggle to fund-raise. Winning here is big for us."

For the second straight year, the Malvern Prep boys took home three first-place plaques: lightweight double, junior quad, and varsity quad.

Malvern Prep's win in the varsity quad came with some controversy, as E.L. Crossley, of Fonthill, Ontario, raced in the preferred No. 3 lane (the Friars were in No. 4) despite being ruled ineligible late in the week for the use of fifth-year students. Crossley, competing as an exhibition team, crossed the finish line first in 4:46.24.

"I think it's a travesty that they were able to race with ineligible students," said Malvern Prep coach Craig Hoffman, whose crew notched a mark of 4:49.14.

"But it takes nothing away from what our student-athletes accomplished."

In the girls' lightweight double, Baldwin (Allie Hoeltzel and Madison Noteware) took top honors in 6:23.39, followed by Springside (6:26.30) and Sacred Heart (6:27.12).

The Lower Merion and Conestoga girls won the lightweight four and junior quad, respectively.
