Pa. Boys: Central, Frankford reach baseball final

GAMP surged ahead of Central in the second inning of their Public League baseball semifinal Thursday at La Salle University, but the Lancers shrugged it off. They scored two runs in the bottom of the inning and went on to beat the Pioneers, 6-3.

GAMP grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second, but the Lancers regained it at 3-2 and stayed on top the rest of the way. Starting pitcher Kevin Pfeifer hit a two-run single in the third inning as Central extended its lead to 6-2.

Mike Cavallaro and Dan Quinn each hit a pair of singles, and Pete Rowe pitched the final four innings to earn the win in relief. He held GAMP to two hits and struck out four.

In the other semifinal, Ricky Alvarez triggered a six-run outburst by Frankford in the second inning, and the Pioneers went on to beat Washington, 7-0.

Alvarez singled to drive in a pair of runs and was joined by Gabriel Cedeno, who hit an RBI single off Aaron Wilmer. The Division A most valuable player, Wilmer suffered the loss.

Augusto Ortega added three singles, stole five bases, and scored three times to help make a winner of Omar Ortiz, who went the distance and struck out three.

Pa. Independent Schools. Tom Stolzer, Sean Cosgriff, and Keenan Howard combined on a five-inning one-hitter to boost Germantown Academy to a 10-0 win over visiting Friends' Central in a quarterfinal game.

Cosgriff relinquished the hit, the only hit given up by the Patriots in their first two games of the tournament. Sean Coyle led the offense with three singles, his 12th homer of the season, three runs scored and four RBIs.

Jesse Biddle tossed a complete-game one-hitter and led Germantown Friends to a 3-0 win over host Haverford School.

Biddle struck out 15 and walked two. In support, Justin Berg hit a double and knocked in two runs.

In a game suspended with one out in the top of the fifth inning because of rain, Chestnut Hill grabbed a 4-0 lead against Perkiomen School on the strength of a two-run homer by Matt Primavera and an RBI single by Dan Rosenbaum.

Garnet Valley overcame a four-goal deficit in the last five minutes and scored the game-winner with 65 seconds left to beat Abington, 12-11, in the District 1 third-place game at Lower Merion.

Steve Smyrl scored the game-winner with the last of his three goals. Ricky Lehman, Eric Warden, Jules Raucci, and Adam Mondell all scored in the final two minutes to tie the game.

In the seventh-place game at West Chester Rustin, Hatboro-Horsham clinched the final District 1 berth in the state tournament with an 11-10 win over Radnor.

Eddie Coombs scored four goals and added an assist for the Hatters.

The title game between Springfield (Delaware County) and Radnor will be played Friday at Harriton at 4 p.m.
