Palumbo nets volleyball championship

In only its second year as a varsity program, Palumbo can call itself the District 12 boys' volleyball champion. The Griffins received 45 digs and 10 service points from Sam Tram and 15 kills along with five blocks to beat Southern, 28-26, 15-25, 25-20 and 29-27, on Thursday at Community College of Philadelphia.

The Griffins received 45 digs and 10 service points from Sam Tram and 15 kills along with five blocks to beat Southern, 28-26, 15-25, 25-20 and 29-27, on Thursday at Community College of Philadelphia.

Palumbo is undefeated and had to work to stay that way, especially in the final game.

"Hustle. That's the only word I can give you is nonstop hustle," Griffins coach E.J. Goldstein said.

"It definitely is cool because our girls won in Class A in the fall, but lost the championship to Masterman. Our team pushed the girls to do better and the girls pushed our team. This year, we had a pretty hard road."

Palumbo will compete in the PIAA Class AA state tournament beginning Tuesday. - Joe Fite
