Pa. Boys: New Hope-Solebury defeats Springfield (Montco), 7-6

Tom Fiala stole home with two outs in the seventh inning to force extra innings, and scored again in the ninth to lift New Hope-Solebury over Springfield (Montgomery County), 7-6, in the semifinals of the District 1 Class AA baseball tournament at Perkiomen Valley on Tuesday.

In the top of the ninth, Fiala doubled and scored on a single by Marco Maltese. Fiala, filling in at catcher after starter David Godsell was injured in the third inning, threw out a Springfield runner trying to steal second in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win.

Winning pitcher Kyle Davis threw a complete game with 12 strikeouts and three walks.

In the other Class AA semifinal, Devon Prep erupted for six runs in the fifth inning and added two in the sixth to wrap up a 12-2 victory over Lower Moreland at Upper Dublin.

Ian Smith, who pitched 12/3 innings in relief, matched winning pitcher Andrew Carroll as each contributed a single, double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. John Laprise went 3 for 3.

District 1 Class AAAA. West Chester Henderson moved into the title game via a 6-5 semifinal win over Great Valley at Glen Mills.

Scott Fenton singled in the tying and winning runs in a five-run fifth inning, and winning pitcher Sean McCornmick struck out 11.

Lacrosse

La Salle scored four of the last five goals of the game, including the game-winner by Kevin Forster, to edge Abington, 11-10, in the first round of the PIAA state tournament at Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Abington, helped by Matt Rambo's three-goal game, took an 8-6 lead into the final period. Goals by Forster, Patrick Resch, Jack Bogorowski, and Nick Cruice set up Forster's clincher with 1 minute, 35 seconds left.

Also in the first round, Andrew Mongeluzzi broke the Lower Merion school record for goals in a season (76) and Jordan Wolf set the school record for single-season assists, but it turned out to be in the Aces' final game of the season, a 12-11 loss to Emmaus at Allentown.

Springfield (Delaware County) ousted Central Bucks East, 11-5, at Harriton behind Joe Venit's six goals.
