Springfield (Delco) topples Carroll in lacrosse

Val Paolucci added four goals, and goalie Janel Folkomer made nine saves, including a key last-minute stop to save the win for Springfield, which also beat Carroll by the same 12-11 score in a regular-season matchup May 13.

Carroll was led by three goals apiece from Hannah Schmitt and Aimee Gennaro.

In other quarterfinal play, District 1 champ Radnor eased past Downingtown East, 20-12,

Unionville ousted Penn Manor, 21-9, at Governor Mifflin as Lizzy Carney assisted on three goals and scored four more, including the 100th of her career.

The Indians' Erin Linthicum had three goals and four assists, Lisa Riondet scored four times, Kathleen Insetta had three goals, and goalie Melissa Lloyd made 17 saves.

Boys' Lacrosse

Left-handed Christian Cardinal scored four goals from his attack position and powered La Salle (21-2) to an 8-5 victory over Springfield (Delaware County) in the quarterfinals of the PIAA state tournament at Harriton.

The Explorers built a 7-2 lead early in the third period as Cardinal netted two goals in each of the first two quarters.

Patrick Resch, Kevin Forster, and Dan Losier each contributed a goal and an assist, and goalie John Lawlor made eight saves.

Conestoga ousted Emmaus, 15-5, highlighted by a five-goal performance from Tyler Brooke at Harriton.

Boys' Volleyball

State College captured the PIAA state Class AAA championship with a 25-19, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19 win over Pennsbury at Penn State.

Pennsbury earned the championship berth by beating Pennridge, 25-19, 26-24, 25-20, in the state semifinals earlier in the day. The win avenged a loss to Pennridge in the District 1 championship match May 27.

College commitment

A. J. Picard, a wing guard from Souderton, has committed to play at Goldey-Beacom, a Division II program in Wilmington, Del. The 6-foot Picard averaged 19 points per game while leading the Indians to a 23-5 record, fourth place in the District 1 Class AAAA playoffs, and a berth in the state tournament.
