Kennedy-Kenrick ousts St. Pius in state softball

In a meeting of two schools that will merge in the fall, Kennedy-Kenrick ended St. Pius X's athletic history on Monday with a 9-2 win in the first round of the PIAA state Class AA softball tournament at Temple's Ambler Campus.

Nikki Troisi, a junior righthander, pitched a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and two walks for the Wolverines (17-6), who took control of the game with a seven-run third inning.

Monica Levins had a two-run single in the big third inning, and Danielle Troisi and Angela Sortino also drove in runs.

"Nikki's pitching was the key for us today," Kennedy-Kenrick coach John Bilella said. "That was the big thing."

Kennedy-Kenrick and St. Pius X will become Pope John Paul II in Royersford in the fall.

State Class AAAA. Maggie Shaffer and Nicole Casagrand combined to pitch Hatboro-Horsham's 11-0 one-hit shutout of Girls High in a first-round game at Upper Merion.

Val Sadowl drove in three runs, Kelsey Kolzer was 3 for 3, and Megan Kelly and Melissa Spinosa had two hits apiece as part of a 12-hit attack by the Hatters, who used numerous bunts against slingshot pitcher Mariah Itchon.

District 1 champ Central Bucks South also won by shutout, handing Warwick its second loss of the season, 4-0, at West Chester East.

Fran Carrullo struck out seven, walked none and missed a perfect game when Lauren LeFever reached base on a slap bunt single in the first inning.

Shana Steigerwalt opened the game with a single and eventually scored the first run on Morgan Decker's fielder's choice, and the Titans (19-2) scored three times in the fourth inning with RBIs by Tyler Vitelli and Taylor Stocks, who scored the last run on an error.

State Class AAA. Erica Cipolloni pitched a one-hitter but Nazareth Academy suffered its only loss of the season, 1-0, to Muhlenberg in the first round at West Chester East.

Cipolloni (19-1), headed to the University of Virginia and one of just two senior starters for Nazareth (23-1), struck out 17 batters, and allowed only a bloop single to Melissa Lamm.

Lamm went to second on a sacrifice bunt and when no one covered third base, took an extra base before scoring the run on a the only passed ball allowed by the Pandas.

Nazareth had four hits - singles by Cipolloni, Alex Stermer, Alex Sawicki and Kate O'Sullivan - off winning pitcher Katie Shaub, including two in the seventh inning but failed to get a run home.

Sophomore Brianna Andraos (18-1) pitched a complete game and also drove in two runs, steering West Chester East past District 3 champion Daniel Boone, 5-2, in Fleetwood.

The Vikings (22-3) broke open a close game with a three-run fifth inning, including an RBI by Andraos and Ally Rupple's bases-loaded single that scored Gina Baratelle and Mikaela Potrako.

Allie Viguers ignited East with a run-scoring double in the first inning.

Rachel Broomhead's single was the only hit Franklin Towne Charter managed in a 14-0 loss to Palisades and pitcher Krista Morrone at Patriot's Park in Allentown.

Morrone struck out a dozen batters and joined teammates Michelle Smith, Jackie Gubler, and Taylor Brittain in driving in two runs apiece for the District 11 champs.

Donegal scored four runs via the international tiebreaker in the 11th inning and escaped with a 5-1 win over Lansdale Catholic (16-6-1) at Temple-Ambler.

Lansdale's Kate Beck singled in Ashley Marks to tie the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the 10th inning, but Donegal came back with four in the 11th, including an RBI double by winning pitcher Kelsey Hannold.

The Crusaders, who started no seniors in their first-ever state playoff game, had seven hits and two walks off Hannold.

State Class A. Christopher Dock (18-5-1) capitalized on having an outfield fence at Upper Merion, getting home runs by sophomores Holly Seiz and Aly Shilling to account for all of its runs in a 6-4 victory over District 11 champ Minersville.

Seiz hit a two-run homer in the third inning, and Shilling connected with two outs in the fifth for her a grand slam and her first home run of the season. Both players had two hits each in support of sophomore pitcher Keli Krause (17-5-1).
