Zaugra, Renegades ended long streak

Alex Zaugra picked an ideal time to have the game of her life. The Shawnee junior goalie stopped almost everything in sight, including a streak that had lasted nearly 11 years.

Alex Zaugra picked an ideal time to have the game of her life. The Shawnee junior goalie stopped almost everything in sight, including a streak that had lasted nearly 11 years.

Zaugra made 21 saves, many of the spectacular variety, as Shawnee defeated Moorestown, 7-6 in the South Jersey Group 3 championship on May 24.

Moorestown had won the previous 10 Tournament of Champions titles and had earned 228 consecutive wins against teams from New Jersey. Its last loss to a New Jersey team had been in 1999 to Summit in the state final.

And the streak would have no doubt continued had Zaugra not made one big save after another.

Trailing 5-1 early in the second half, Shawnee scored five consecutive goals and took a 6-5 lead on Nicole Troost's score with 9 minutes and 17 seconds remaining.

Moorestown's Stephanie Toy tied the game at 6-6 with 2:04 to play, but Kristin Kocher provided the game-winner with 12.6 seconds left.

Shawnee received two goals each from Troost, Kocher and Kristin Mutch and one goal from Becky Stiles.

Shortly after Kocher's second goal, one streak was officially ended and one major celebration began.
