S. Jersey clubs win openers

Stars of Public, Catholic Leagues play Tuesday.

The 25th annual Carpenter Cup all-star baseball tournament opened Monday at FDR Park's Richie Ashburn Field with a rare tripleheader that included no teams from Southeastern Pennsylvania.

That will change Tuesday when four of the six teams are from Pennsylvania, including an all-Philadelphia matchup at 12:30 p.m. between the Catholic and Public League all-stars.

South Jersey's Olympic/Colonial began the tournament with a five-run rally in the top of the ninth to defeat South Jersey rival Tri-Cape, 10-9.

Bishop Eustace centerfielder John Litz tied the score at 9 with a three-run homer, and the winning run came on a double steal, with Camden County Tech's Wilson Ulloa crossing the plate on a throwing error.

Defending champion Burlington County overcame a 5-2 deficit after four innings to defeat Delaware South, 13-6.

Olympic/Colonial will meet Burlington County in Friday's 9 a.m. game with the winner advancing to the June 28 semifinal at Citizens Bank Park.
