Harriton girls’ tennis squad wins 10th straight district crown

Harriton completed a decade-long dominance of District 1 Class AA tennis with a 4-1 team championship win over Lower Moreland at Plymouth Whitemarsh on Monday.

The Rams have won the title in each of the last 10 seasons.

They got an impressive win at first singles from Jen Shulkin, who topped Arianne Polatnick, 6-3, 6-0. Polatnick was coming off sharing a title in doubles with teammate Jess Hyman on Saturday.

Hyman provided the lone highlight for Lower Moreland, registering the lone victory of the day with a win at third singles.

Class AAA. In a semifinal match, visiting third-seeded Radnor swept the doubles and knocked off No. 2 Wissahickon, 4-1.

One of the key matches came at first doubles when the Radnor team of Lizzie Curley and Hannah Rose Nussbaum outlasted Danielle Mustin and Kathleen Suh, 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 6-3. The second doubles also went to three sets with the Red Raiders emerging victorious behind Alyssa Norton and Erin Reid.

In another semifinals, fifth-seeded Henderson beat top-seeded Conestoga, 3-2, at the Upper Main Line YMCA.

Henderson and Radnor will square off for the crown on Thursday.

Public. Host Central got straight-set wins from Alex Lawall, Lily Goldberg and Valerie Cherny in the singles matches to down Edison, 5-0, in a league team playoff quarterfinal match.

Masterman earned its spot in the semifinals with a 3-2 quarterfinal win over visiting Bodine as Hannah Schwarzman earned a key 6-4, 6-3 win over Tyra Smith at second singles.

Host Girls' High got a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles from Lillian Smtih in a 5-0 win over Frankford.

Cross-Country

A tight pack of four talented runners helped Notre Dame win its sixth-straight Inter-Ac League team title at Chestnut Hill Academy.

After Penn Charter's Catie Skinner posted a time of 18 minutes, 57 seconds to win the race, Notre Dame placed the next four runners across the finish line.

Maria Seykora (19:08) was second, followed by teammates Caroline Powers (19:53), Julianne Garvey (19:57) and Sibogan Dougherty (20:23).

Field Hockey

Council Rock North blanked visiting Bensalem, 5-0, to clinch the Suburban One National Conference title for the second straight year. The Indians (11-3 overall, 11-2 league) got two goals and an assist from Hannah Plappert.

Council Rock South got goals from Alexis Carroll and Colleen Kirlin to beat visiting Pennsbury, 2-1.

Suburban One American. Hannah Gilliam scored all three goals to carry Cheltenham to a 3-0 win at Upper Moreland, the first win of the year for the Panthers (1-13), who got 13 saves from Emily Hawkins.

Public. Ashley Alston scored off a penalty corner in the first half to give host Lincoln a 1-0 win over Central. The Railsplitters played well in front of goalie Marissa Murphy, who needed only to make one save.

Inter-Ac. Katherine O'Donnell's two goals proved to be the difference for Penn Charter in its 3-1 win at Springside. Ali Rosen also scored for the Quakers. It was the first league loss of the year for the Lions (5-1-1), who got a first-half goal from Nicole Volgraf.

Bicentennial. Sarah Flood had a goal and an assist for host Jenkintown in its 4-0 win over Calvary Christian.

Ches-Mont. Emily Clark scored the middle three goals for host Avon Grove in its 5-0 win over Oxford.

Nonleague. Ashley O'Donnell's goal with one second left in regulation gave Academy Park a 1-1 tie at Delco Christian. Brittney Weideman scored for the Knights.

Ellie Andersen scored three minutes into overtime to give Shipley a 2-1 win at Archbishop Prendergast. Andersen's goal was the product of Avery Safford's second assist on the day. Safford also assisted on Allison Dombroski's goal.

Sophomore Jackie Sell had a goal and an assist as host Perkiomen School earned a 3-1 win over Quakertown Christian.

Carolyn Flannery scored twice for host Harriton in a 3-2 win over Norristown.

Veronica Brandley and Beth Lounsberry scored for Bishop McDevitt in its 2-1 win at Penn Wood.

Soccer

Kendall Frey's overtime goal gave Downingtown East a 2-1 Ches-Mont League win at Unionville, clinching both the National Division title and the overall league crown for the Cougars.

Janna Brown had two goals and an assist for host West Chester Rustin in its 4-0 win over Coatesville.

Catholic. Courtney Weidner scored 30 seconds into overtime to give host Little Flower a 2-1 win over Archbishop Carroll.

In other league games:

Archbishop Wood remained unbeaten in league play, getting a pair of goals and an assist from Monica Re in an 8-0 win at Bishop McDevitt. The Vikings (15-1, 10-0) scored four goals in each half.

Host Archbishop Ryan got a pair of goals from Brittany Robinson in a 4-0 win over Hallahan.

Bryn Wassel scored a pair of goals and Hannah Whitby chipped in with two assists for Lansdale Catholic in its 7-0 win at Neumann-Goretti.

Kelly Piell scored in the game's 51st minute for host Conwell-Egan in its 1-0 win over Cardinal O'Hara. Summer Taylor assisted for the Eagles (10-1-1), who got eight saves and a shutout from goalie Kristen Trojecki.

Catholic Academies. Junior striker Kimmy Spaventa's second-half goal stood up for host Villa Maria in a 1-0 win over Villa Joseph Marie.

Goalie Lauren Martinelli had six saves for her ninth shutout of the season for the Hurricanes (12-3, 10-1).

Maura Fortino's second goal of the game gave Merion Mercy a 3-2 overtime win over Nazareth Academy. Fortino scored on a breakaway with five minutes left in overtime. Mary Grace Zeller also scored for the Golden Bears (6-8-3, 4-6-1). Maggie Borski and Elizabeth McBride scored for the Pandas.

Friends Schools. Robin Harding assisted on a pair of goals for Abington Friends in its 3-1 win at Friends Select.

Suburban One American. Danielle Leace scored as host Plymouth Whitemarsh topped Upper Merion, 1-0.

Suburban One Continental. Sophomore Tory Adlam scored the first two goals for host Hatboro-Horsham in a 5-1 win over Central Bucks South. Adlam scored the only goal of the first half and her goal early in the second half, off a pass from another sophomore, Marykate Bateman, was the game-winner.

Bicentennial. Shaquira McCottry's two goals lifted host Girard College to its first league win of the season, 2-1, over MaST Charter. McCottry scored both goals in the first 30 minutes of play. Olivia Velez had 12 saves in goal for the Cavaliers (2-10 overall, 1-4 league).

Tri-County. Tamara Mokowitz's hat trick powered host Barrack Hebrew past Del-Val Friends, 7-0. Lila Manstein needed to make only three saves for the shutout.

Central. Strath Haven's title-clinching win in the Central League on Friday was its first since 2007, when it won the championship outright in an unbeaten league season.

Nonleague. Delco Christian traveled to Pottsville and came away with a 6-2 win over Nativity BVM behind three goals from Emily Evans. The Knights (6-5-1) also got two goals and two assists from Carley Neal and a single goal from Julia Perez.

Nicole Hallinan scored in the 59th and 65th minute to give host Interboro a 3-1 win over Chichester.
