Northeast's reign on the top of the Public League field hockey world came to an end on Monday, but not without a couple of extra overtimes.
At Germantown, Washington came away with a 1-0, double-overtime win over the five-time and defending league champion, thanks to a goal from Selena Powers.
"It's wonderful," Eagles coach Ann Tunney said. "Last year, we went undefeated and the championship game, the girls just didn't have it."
The Eagles lost, 2-0.
"This game was just so tight. The first half, they had a lot of shots on our goalie, but pure grit got us through that."
With 2 minutes, 3 seconds remaining in the second overtime, Barbara Danhardt found Powers with a nifty pass just inside the circle and Powers blasted it home.
It was Washington's first title since 2004. Northeast had won it five times since.
The Eagles got 20 saves from goalie Juliana Garcia, who kept them into the game until Powers could find the range.
Northeast goalie Juania Velasquez turned back 10 of the 11 shots she faced.
Before the Vikings' current run, Washington had either won or shared the title in the 11 previous years.
