A week after Harriton took the Class AA team tennis title, it brought home another Class AA title in doubles on Saturday at Hershey Racquet Club.

A week after Harriton took the Class AA team tennis title, it brought home another Class AA title in doubles on Saturday at Hershey Racquet Club.

A little strategy adjustment after the first set helped.

The Rams' team of Jennie Shulkin and Marnie Blumenthal dropped the first set to the York Catholic team of Ava and Anna Spoden, 1-6, but rallied to win the final two sets, 6-3, 6-4, to take the state title.

"The strategy they were using wasn't working," Harriton coach Jack Ladden said. "They were playing two singles players. The lefthander was in the ad [right] court and the righthander was in the deuce [left] court, so you had to hit to their backhands and we were able to adjust."

Harriton has not won the doubles in four years.

The York Catholic team entered the tournament as District 3 champions and beat the District 11 championship team from Southern Lehigh, Robyn Ferraro and Morgan Oechsle, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the semifinals.

In Class AAA singles, Radnor's Cristina Grimaldi took third place with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Gov. Mifflin's Alyssa Gleason.

She dropped a 6-2, 6-1 semifinal to Sara Perelman of Shady Side Academy. Perelman fell to Ronit Yurosky of Plum, 6-3, 6-0, in the final.

In Class AAA doubles, the West Chester Henderson team of Erin Bowsher and Becca Rodgers took third place with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Abby Belser and Emily Kager of Manheim Township.

Girls' Volleyball

Upper Merion topped Unionville, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, and 25-19, to win the PIAA District 1 Class AAA championship at Norristown.

It was the second district title in the last three years for the Vikings (21-0).

Setter Cassidy Koenig had 42 assists, 17 digs and 12 kills for Upper Merion.

"Cassidy pretty much dominated the court today," Upper Merion coach Tony Funsten said.

A freshman, Melanie Ingram, had 14 kills and 22 digs.

"Melanie played like a senior today," Funsten said.

Shannon Phillips had 33 digs and Casey Griffith served out the match with eight kills and four aces.

"She served in the decisive game and broke it open for us," Funsten said.

In the third-place match, also at Norristown, Mount St. Joseph outlasted Avon Grove, 25-17, 25-23, 16-25, 19-25, 17-15.
