College Basketball: Pitt upends UConn in Big East clash

Ashton Gibbs scored 21 points as Pittsburgh's balance overcame Kemba Walker's one-man offense for No. 4 Connecticut, and the No. 6 Panthers easily won the Big East's first matchup of top 10 teams by 78-63 on Monday night.

Walker scored 31 points, but missed 17 of 27 shots as Pittsburgh repeatedly limited the visiting Huskies to a single shot in a possession - often a bad one. The Huskies shot 31.7 percent and had only two scorers with more than five points until the closing minutes in the conference opener.

Brad Wanamaker, who took turns with Gibbs shadowing one of the nation's leading scorers, added 14 points as Pittsburgh (13-1) beat Connecticut (10-1) for the fourth straight time and the fifth time in six games.

Ohio State 100, Tennessee-Martin 40 - William Buford scored the first seven points of the game and came out of an offensive funk to finish with 23, as the No. 2 Buckeyes (13-0) crushed the Skyhawks (4-9) in Columbus, Ohio.

Missouri 97, Northern Illinois 61 - Marcus Denmon scored 24 points to lead the No. 10 Tigers (12-1) to a blowout victory over the Huskies (3-7) in Columbia, Mo.

Louisville 104, Morgan State 74 - Preston Knowles scored a career-high 31 points, and the No. 22 Cardinals (11-1) routed the Bears (4-5) in Louisville, Ky.

Penn State 69, Indiana 60 - Jeff Brooks had a career-high 23 points and Talor Battle added 19 to help the Nittany Lions (8-4, 1-0 Big Ten) hold off the Hoosiers (9-5, 0-1) in Bloomington, Ind.

In the area: Delaware State had no answer for Clemson's balanced attack, led by Jerai Grant (15 points), and the visiting Hornets fell to the Tigers, 76-41.

Temple back in top 25. The Temple Owls returned to the Associated Press top 25 poll on Monday at No. 25 after a four-week absence.

The Owls (9-2) have won six games in a row, including a win over No. 9 Georgetown.

Temple next visits No. 8 Villanova for a Thursday night Big Five showdown. The Wildcats (10-1) held steady at No. 8 in the AP top 25 after defeating Monmouth, 76-36.

Smith leaves Marquette. Marquette said freshman guard Reggie Smith will leave the school's basketball program.

The school said Smith asked to be released effective immediately. It was not clear where he might transfer.

Smith started five of the eight games he played this season but was averaging less than 10 minutes per game, with 1.4 points and 1.5 rebounds. He missed the team's last two games because of an illness.

In a statement, Marquette coach Buzz Williams thanked Williams for his contributions and wished him "all the best" on and off the court the rest of his career.

Game canceled. The University of Florida's game with Fairfield, scheduled for Tuesday night, has been canceled. A snowstorm in the Northeast prevented Fairfield from traveling to Gainesville, Fla. The game will not be made up.
