Four mat teams aim for state hardware

Winning a sectional title is nice.

Winning a sectional title is nice.

Being the No. 1 team in South Jersey is swell, too.

But the Timber Creek wrestling team is looking for more.

"We want to be No. 1 in the state," Timber Creek senior 140-pounder Kevin Birmingham said. "That's all we've talked about since the first day of practice."

Timber Creek (23-2), the No. 1 team in South Jersey in The Inquirer Top 10, will get its shot at the top spot Sunday at the Poland Springs Arena at Toms River North.

Timber Creek, which won its second consecutive South Jersey Group 3 title with a 35-18 victory over Toms River South on Friday night, will face South Plainfield (20-3) in the Group 3 state semifinals at 10 a.m.

South Plainfield is No. 1 in the state, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. High Point (17-1), the No. 2 team in the state rankings, will face Roxbury in the other Group 3 semifinal, with winners to meet at 3:30 p.m.

"We don't mind being in the toughest group," Timber Creek coach Nick Cottone said. "That's what we want. We're sick and tired of going up there and losing."

Paulsboro (20-1), Delsea (20-3), and Camden Catholic (21-6) also will compete for state titles Sunday.

Paulsboro, which beat Haddonfield, 31-23, in Friday night's South Jersey Group 1 final, will chase its 28th state title. The Red Raiders will meet Roselle Park (18-7) in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m., with the championship match set for 6.

"Going to states is unbelievable," Paulsboro senior 171-pounder Matt Cosgrove said after his victory Friday night helped push the Red Raiders past Haddonfield. "I didn't want to leave here my senior year without a state title. We want to keep the tradition going."

Delsea, which won the South Jersey Group 2 title with a 37-24 victory over Buena on Friday night, will meet Brearley (15-1) in the state semifinals at 10 a.m., with the finals at 3:30 p.m.

Camden Catholic won the South B title with a 47-16 victory over Bishop Eustace on Friday night. The Irish will seek their 13th overall state title and eighth in a row when they face DePaul (10-9) in the Non-Public B state finals at 6 p.m.
