La Salle dominates Dist. 12 championships

La Salle continued its domination of PIAA District 12 Class AAA wrestling with a team championship and eight individual gold medals on Saturday at Edison.

The Explorers, who already captured the team dual-meet title, amassed 252 team points, well ahead of second-place Father Judge (108.5) in a 17-team field.

The eight individual champions for the Explorers were Bryan Pflanz (112 pounds), Joe Mazzi (130), Matt Cimato (140), Casey Kent (145), Shane Springer (160), Nick Burns (171), P.J. Steinmetz (189), and Ryan Geiger (285).

Geiger's record is now 27-3 after he was awarded a win over Judge's Jeremy Rieth (injury default). Rieth is now 35-3.

Edison's Dominick Boseman, who pinned La Salle's Antonio Perusi in the second period to win the 215-pound trophy, was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler.

Father Judge had two individual champions in Tom Goodyear (152) and Anthony Siwek (103), as did Monsignor Bonner, grabbing gold at 119 from Ryan Kiefer and at 135 from Joe DePhillipo.

Northeast's lone title came from Marius Kola (125).

At Spring-Ford, Unionville's Mason Popham won the 135-pound weight class and was named outstanding wrestler. Owen J. Roberts nipped Garnet Valley for the team title.

The top five finishers in each weight class advance to the Southeast Regionals on Friday and Saturday.

Lower Moreland's stellar season continued with by taking the team scoring in addition to a pair of individual crowns in the competition at Pottstown.

Winning individual titles for the Lions were Seung-Gyu Rim (103) and Dominic Scirrotto (145).

Jesse Goldstein (152) added a third-place finish for Lower Moreland.

Second-place Pottstown had four individual champions: Zane Bechtel (119), Trenton Clifford (125), Jasheel Brown (130) and Rashaad Lighty (171).

Two of the highlights came at 152 pounds, when Springfield (Montgomery County) senior Michael Honeywell recorded his 100th career win. The tournament's most valuable wrestler came out of that class, Conor Myers of Pope John Paul II.

Chris Yankowich scored a 6-5 overtime decision in the 135-pound final to help Germantown Academy to a fourth-place team finish in the national championships at Lehigh University.

Blair Academy took the team title with five individual winners, while Malvern Prep was 11th and Hill School placed 13th. Hill School also won the sportsmanship award, given by the officials.
