Winslow Twp. hires Thompson to coach football

Former Point Pleasant Boro coach Calvin Thompson has been named football coach at Winslow Township.

Former Point Pleasant Boro coach Calvin Thompson has been named football coach at Winslow Township.

Thompson, whose hiring was approved by the board of education Wednesday night, replaces Mike McBride, who resigned after last season to pursue a law degree.

"He brings a wealth of experience," Winslow Township athletic director Nython Carter said of Thompson. "He's a highly accomplished coach."

Thompson was the coach at Point Pleasant Boro, in Ocean County, from 2002 through 2010. Three of his teams made the South Jersey Group 2 finals, winning the crown with a victory over Camden in 2005, and losing in the title game to West Deptford in 2004 and 2007.

"I'm excited about the opportunity," Thompson said. "I see it as a daunting challenge. I'm aware of the competition in that area, but I'm excited about the type of athletes that we will have and want to see where I can take that talent."

Thompson, who has his own training and conditioning business, will be hired as an adjunct, Carter said.

Thompson is a Manasquan High School graduate. He played football at East Stroudsburg (Pa), starting for three years at linebacker and graduating in 1985.
