Minutemaids roll in lacrosse playoff, 19-2

Top-seeded Washington Township opened the playoffs in style on Tuesday, presenting longtime coach Sandy Stockl with her 200th career win as the Minutemaids blitzed No. 16 Absegami, 19-2, in the South Jersey Group 4 girls' lacrosse tournament.

Brittany Bollendorf was the game's leading scorer with four goals, while Erin Waller contributed a hat trick and four assists for the hosts, who ran out to a 13-2 first-half lead.

Katie Gill (3 goals, 3 assists) and Jill Spencer (2 goals, 3 assists) also played key roles in the attack, with Meredith Bechler and Katrina Dargusch splitting time in the nets.

Next up for the Minutemaids (14-2) is a quarterfinal at home on Friday against the winner of Wednesday's match between eighth-seeded Cherokee and No. 9 Cherry Hill East.

In other Group 4 opening-round action:

Marissa Pennypacker and Josie Quaile netted four goals apiece for second-seeded Clearview (13-3) in a 19-4 rout of No. 15 Egg Harbor Township.

The Pioneers had six players score two goals or more - including hat tricks by Julie Sutton and Lauren Young. Goalie Rachel Hall faced just seven shots on goal in eliminating the Eagles.

Fourth-seeded Eastern controlled play throughout in slamming No. 13 Southern Regional, 17-4.

Alexa Rubino and Danielle LaRocca scored four apiece and Sydney Cetrullo chipped in three goals and two assists for the Vikings, who unleashed 45 shots on goal.

Eastern will host a quarterfinal match on Friday night against fifth-seeded Brick Memorial - which advanced with an 11-4 win over No. 12 seed Millville.

The Thunderbolts (12-2) fell behind early and couldn't recover, despite getting two goals from Katie Parent and 15 saves by netminder Felicia Branagan.

Burlington County. Host Moorestown took command from the outset, building a 13-2 lead en route to demolishing Holy Cross, 21-4.

Stephanie Toy's four-goal, two-assist effort paced 13 players on the score sheet for the Quakers.

Boys' Tennis

Lenape's Dan Sha rallied from a set down to win a third-set tiebreaker, 8-6, and clinch the Indians' 3-2 victory over visiting Cherokee in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 tournament.

Sha beat Armando Fraile, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), at third singles, and the Indians added wins from Mike Humes at first singles, and Marc Reynaud and Ian Patel at first doubles.

S.J. Group 3. Top-seeded Moorestown sailed past visiting Delsea, 5-0, and lost a total of five games in 10 sets. Colin Groundwater and Bryce Cody each won singles matches by 6-1, 6-0.

Three-set wins in both doubles matches carried Kingsway past visiting Central Regional, 3-2. Peter Brennan and Steve Gannon won by 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, at first doubles, and Joe Capasso and Pat Cunningham added a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win at second doubles.

S.J. Group 1. Haddon Township advanced to the sectional semifinals with a 4-1 triumph over visiting Woodbury. Chris Mulroy, Eric Bassett and Wes Genarie won singles matches for the Hawks.

Boys' Lacrosse

Gloucester Catholic senior Kevin Kohout scored three goals and broke the school record for goals in a season as the Rams topped visiting Woodstown, 9-4.

Kohout has 41 goals this spring, topping the mark of 40 set last year by Ryan Turner.

Gloucester Catholic goalies John Coppola and Shane Brophy combined for nine saves.
