Pa. Boys: Freshman Freer fires no-hitter in Prep Charter’s playoff victory

Freer pitched a seven-inning no-hitter, striking out nine, and he got help from senior batterymate Mike Sandefur, whose two-run homer in the seventh broke a 2-2 tie.

In other league playoff games:

Junior catcher Frank Legrady drove in six runs, and senior centerfielder Darien Gunther knocked in four more as Roxborough overwhelmed visiting Southern, 18-3.

Kyle Lewis struck out 15 and walked only two over seven innings in pitching Bodine to a 4-2 win at Franklin Learning Center.

The Ambassadors (4-8) travel to Philadelphia Electrical on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

John Spinks pitched a three-inning complete game for the Indians (10-3), who host Swenson in a second-round game on Tuesday at 3:15.

Peter Rowe and Mike Cavallaro combined on a five-hitter in pitching Central past visiting Fels, 12-2. Cavallaro, who pitched the final inning in relief, was the game's key hitter with a 3-for-3 day that included three RBIs. Both Ryan Dydak and Anthony DeVito were 2 for 2 for the Lancers.

Felipe Montalvo went 2 for 3 with two RBIs as host Edison topped rival Kensington, 8-3. Johnny Pagan pitched the first five innings and struck out 13 to earn the win.

Host Northeast used a three-run error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Lincoln, 10-9.

Host Frankford ended Germantown's season, 11-1, behind Augusto Ortega, who went 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

At Bok, visiting Philadelphia Academy Charter rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to win, 7-4. The Chargers were the higher seed and the official home team but had to play on the road because of the condition of their field. The key hit for the Chargers was Chris Maguire's two-run double in the sixth. Brian Walsh pitched a complete game for the winners (9-4).

Host Masterman beat GAMP, 2-0, to take the league's Class A playoff spot behind David Ashbridge's complete-game three hitter. The Pioneers' Dom Raia allowed six hits and struck out 15.

Catholic. Roman Catholic earned the sixth and final seed in the league playoffs with a 2-1 win over rival St. Joseph's Prep. Erik DeLone pitched a complete game, and Will Dougherty had two of the Cahillites' seven hits. The Hawks' Ryan Winton was the hard-luck loser, victimized by five errors.

Inter-Ac. Malvern Prep, which clinched the league title on Saturday, closed out the regular season with an 11-5 win at Haverford School.

District 1 Class AAAA. Jon Staats' RBI triple with two outs in the seventh inning gave Plymouth Whitemarsh a 4-3, first-round win at Interboro, the first playoff victory for the Colonials since 2008. Stephen Wallace pitched out of a jam in the seventh inning to get the win, getting the final two outs with a runner on third base.

Joey Casselberry pitched six innings as Methacton topped host Strath Haven, 3-2, in a rain-shortened game.

Owen J. Roberts got a walk-off, two-run homer from Sean Muscovitch in a 12-2 win over visiting Penncrest. Jared Pinelli and Kyle Gillenwater also homered for the Wildcats.

Host North Penn got a strong effort from Alec Lashkevich on the mound and three hits apiece from Matt Davey and Pete Edgar in beating Kennett, 6-0.

Bicentennial. Host Calvary Christian closed out the league portion of its season by rallying for a 5-4 win over Morrisville. The Cougars (10-8) scored two runs in the sixth inning, getting key hits from Chris Bires and Degen Reilley.

Lacrosse

At Simon Gratz, Audenried used a pair of goals from Justin Simmons to beat Del-Val Charter, 4-3, in a first-round Public League playoff game, earning a Tuesday semifinal date with top-seeded Washington, also at Gratz.

Tennis

Haverford School's 7-0, Inter-Ac win over visiting Malvern Prep clinched a share of the league title with Episcopal Academy. The Fords won all six of the played matches by straight sets and one by forfeit.
