Tues. S.J. girls’ roundup: Lenape wins lacrosse semifinal

In its unexpected run through the South Jersey Group 4 girls' lacrosse playoffs, Lenape claimed another victim on Tuesday. The seventh-seeded Indians rallied from a 7-1 deficit to take down No. 3 seed Toms River North, 14-12.

The semifinal win, coming on the heels of an 11-10 quarterfinal upset of No. 2 seed Clearview, allows Lenape to turn its attention to Thursday's sectional championship game at top-seeded Washington Township.

Although Toms River North controlled play early, Lenape was able to close the gap to 7-4 at halftime. The Indians fought back to tie twice before finally going ahead with five minutes remaining in regulation on Emily Duffey's fourth goal of the game. Lizzie Duffey's second goal closed out the scoring.

Carly Walters (three), Rena Carabases (two), and Courtney Norton (two) also had multiple goals for Lenape, while goalie Caroline Huelster came through with 22 saves.

South Jersey Group 1. Lindsay Brophy and Gretchen Kiep each had a hat trick and two assists to pace top-seeded Haddonfield over No. 4 seed Bishop Eustace, 16-10, in a semifinal.

The Bulldogs will host No. 6 seed Pingry in the final on Thursday.

South Jersey Group 3. Nikki Shapiro (five goals) and Nikki McMonagle (four goals) led the way as top-seeded Moorestown rolled, 18-5, over No. 4 seed Seneca.

Alyssa Welsh struck out nine in pitching a five-inning perfect game, and helped herself with a two-run double as fourth-seeded Gateway ousted No. 13 seed Woodbury, 10-0, in a South Jersey Group 1 opening-round game.

Colleen Connolly tripled, drew three walks, and drove in four runs, and Erica Esposito added two hits and three RBIs for the Gators.

In other South Jersey Group 1 openers:

A two-out infield error opened the floodgates in the first inning for 10th-seeded Penns Grove, which took advantage by scoring five runs - two on a home run by Megan Zigler - en route to a 6-0 victory at No. 7 seed Pitman. Jordan LaRosa made the early lead stand up by tossing a two-hit shutout.

Brittany Dolson opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning, and Kate Maas ended the game in the fifth with a walk-off grand slam as fifth-seeded Gloucester pounded No. 12 seed Paulsboro, 14-1.

Ninth-seeded Schalick scratched out a run in the top of the seventh inning to topple No. 8 seed Haddon Township, 2-1. Janna Gaburo struck out eight and scattered four hits in limiting the high-scoring Hawks to a single run.

South Jersey Group 4. Kylie Mulholland launched a three-run homer, Taylor Coroneos knocked in two runs with two hits, and Alissa Schoelkopf retired 13 batters on strikes in hurling a two-hit shutout as third-seeded Washington Township cruised past No. 14 seed Egg Harbor Township, 8-0.

Brielle Reighn knocked in two runs with a pair of doubles and limited No. 12 seed Toms River North to two singles as fifth-seeded Triton cruised to a 10-0 win.

Top-seeded Eastern tagged No. 16 seed Atlantic City with an 11-1 loss as Steph Vuono gave up just five hits and Madison Tiernan batted 3 for 4 with two runs, three RBIs, and three stolen bases.

Ashley Mitchell (2 for 4) drove in three runs, and winning pitcher Tiarra Sanabria (3 for 3) knocked in two to highlight seventh-seeded Williamstown's 11-1 victory over No. 10 seed Millville.

South Jersey Group 3. Freshman righthander Jamie Robertson pitched seven strong innings in her first varsity start, and batterymate Alyssa Sims batted 3 for 3 and knocked in three runs to lead fourth-seeded Cherry Hill West to an 8-2 triumph over No. 13 seed Moorestown.

Kayla Rohm singled twice and drove in the eventual winning run in a two-run fourth inning as fifth-seeded Delsea slipped past No. 12 seed Westampton Tech, 3-2.

Taylor Favinger belted a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning, and Erynn Sobieski went the distance in pitching No. 9 seed GCIT past eighth-seeded Hammonton, 6-4. Claire Lucas and Morgan Neilson combined for four hits and four RBIs for the Cheetahs, who advance to Thursday's quarterfinal round at top-seeded Pinelands.

Dominique Ficara fanned eight in tossing a three-hit shutout, and the senior also contributed two hits, two runs, and three RBIs in a 13-hit attack that carried second-seeded Kingsway to an 11-0 rout of No. 15 seed Ocean City. Tori Danner teamed up with Katie Dickson for five hits, five runs and three RBIs for the Dragons.

Shortstop Breanna Worrell had the hot bat for seventh-seeded Deptford, going 3 for 4 with three runs scored and four RBIs in a 9-4 victory over No. 10 seed Timber Creek.

South Jersey Group 2. Brittany Scott opened Buena's playoff run by striking out 13 in posting her third no-hitter of the season, and the second-seeded Chiefs started the scoring parade early en route to a 10-0 home win over No. 15 seed Lower Cape May. Maria Santiago batted 4 for 4 and scored three times, while Natalie Giannascoli had three hits and two RBIs.

Winning pitcher Sam Toland roped a two-run double in the first inning, putting seventh-seeded Middle Township on course for a 17-3 romp over No. 10 seed Pennsauken Tech. Chelsea Bright and Kelsey Hand accounted for four hits, three runs and three RBIs for the Panthers.

Brielle Rolon and Mariah Hans each had two RBIs to back the three-hit pitching of Shayla Sweeney as third-seeded Haddon Heights made quick work of No. 14 seed Collingswood, 10-0.

Central Jersey Group 1. Emily Bausher struck out 11 to boost her career total to 999, and the senior also contributed two hits and three RBIs - including a two-run home run - in second-seeded New Egypt's 10-0 whitewash of No. 15 seed Manville.

Sydney Woreck struck out 10 in tossing a two-hit shutout, and Kaitlyn Proetti contributed two hits and two RBIs in powering top-seeded Florence past No. 16 seed Palmyra, 10-0.
