Charlie Hooker lined a single to drive in two runs and ignite Upper Moreland's 9-2 victory over Pope John Paul II on Wednesday in the PIAA District 1 Class AAA baseball championship game at West Chester East.

The Bears (16-4) fell behind by 2-0 until Hooker's hit with two strikes and two outs in the top of the fourth inning tied the game. Upper Moreland scored in every inning after that, led by Mike Janas' three hits and two RBIs and Ryan Snyder's two hits and three runs.

"The team was very confident [after falling behind]," Bears coach Ernie Rehr said. "They were very up, they stayed very steady and it was fun to watch as a coach."

Junior Kyle Walder (7-1) pitched a complete game, sending the Bears into the first round of the state tournament on Monday.

Class A. Calvary Christian (13-9) claimed its first District 1 championship in baseball with a 3-0 shutout of Morrisville (13-7) at West Chester Henderson.

Sophomore righthander Tyler Scheuer allowed just two hits, struck out six, and walked two to get the win.

Dan Reber doubled and scored on a single by Jesse Geisler for the game's first run.

Calvary also beat the Bulldogs by 5-4 on May 23.

Softball

Masterman became the first Public League team to beat a Catholic League squad in a District 12 softball championship game, topping Bishop McDevitt, 8-1, for the Class AA title at La Salle University.

Emily Ashbridge dominated the win, pitching a two-hitter with one walk and a season-high 17 strikeouts.

The senior also had half of Masterman's four hits, scoring twice and lining a two-run single in a five-run sixth inning.

Masterman (16-3), aided by numerous walks, advanced to the state tournament on Monday,

Class AAA. Lansdale Catholic (15-5) successfully defended its district title with an 11-0 shutout of Franklin Towne Charter at La Salle.

Mary Cate Scott pitched a one-hitter, allowing a third-inning single, striking out four batters and walking two.

The Crusaders had four hits, including a two-run single by Kelly Schoener, and a single from Brittany Bray, who scored a pair of runs.

Boys' Lacrosse

District 1 champ Conestoga (22-1) opened the PIAA state playoffs with a 15-3 rout of Cumberland Valley at West Chester Henderson.

Brad Lord netted four goals, Connor Frisina and Kyle Morrison each scored three goals and assisted on another, and midfielders Jared Jacobs and Zach Gregory combined to win 20 of 22 faceoffs.

Girls' Lacrosse

Archbishop Carroll got five goals each from sisters Natalie and Hannah Schmitt while grabbing a 19-14 win over Boyertown in the first round of the PIAA state tournament at Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Rachel Flynn added four goals, and Alyssa DiBona had 10 draw controls and three ground balls. Boyertown's Amanda Smith netted five goals.

Garnet Valley ousted Harriton, 18-10, at West Chester East behind Hailey Barnes' six goals, Kare Stroup's two goals and three assists, and eight saves by her twin sister, goalie Kate Stroup.

Girls' Soccer

Fred Brannon, a coach at Central for 37 years, including the last 13 as girls' soccer coach, ended his career with the Lancers' 2-0 loss to ELCO in the first round of the PIAA state tournament at Northeast.

Central was outshot by 12-5, including three shots from Kiarah Cannady.
