History tells us the results will not be pretty today when six District 12 teams tackle first-round games in the PIAA state baseball playoffs.

Maybe it will prove to be wrong.

In the first 6 years of PIAA competition for Philly squads - all 6 for the Public League, just 2 for the Catholic League - the first round produced six wins and 22 losses (.214 percentage). And four of those triumphs belonged to CL members.

Today's best viewing likely will be available at Richie Ashburn Field, in South Philly's FDR Park (enter from 20th and Pattison), as a doubleheader will offer a pair of D-12's No. 1 seeds.

It will be AAA Neumann-Goretti vs. Twin Valley, of D-3, at 12:30, and AAAA Monsignor Bonner vs. Council Rock South, of D-1, at approximately 4:15.

Coach Lou Spadaccini's N-G squad last Tuesday captured the CL championship (3-1, in eight innings, over Bonner) and is perfect overall at 21-0.

Full-fledged CL baseball began in 1945. This school year, N-G became the first CL school to go perfect in league play in basketball and baseball, including playoffs, in the same school year. The hoops Saints also claimed a state crown.
