Some dream matchups for this season

There are plenty of good games this week.

There are plenty of good games this week.

There are plenty of good games every week.

But we can dream, can't we? Here are some football games we'll never see, unfortunately:

No. 7 Haddonfield (6-0) vs. No. 4 Camden Catholic (6-0). I think the Group 2 Bulldogs could stand up against any team in the Top 10, on a one-game basis. If they played a WJFL American or National schedule for nine weeks, it could be a problem because they lack numbers.

But in one game? Haddonfield vs. Camden Catholic would be a good one.

The Irish are a little bigger and stronger, but not by much. The best thing about this game would be a clash of terrific linebacking corps, with Camden Catholic featuring juniors Jarred Alwan, Sean Collins and Will Jackson, and Haddonfield countering with seniors Carson Stack, Rob Perkins and Matt Bhaya.

There are connections between these schools, too, as Haddonfield always sends a bunch of students to Camden Catholic. I'd like the Irish in this game, but by less than a touchdown.

No. 5 Pennsauken (5-1) vs. No. 2 Timber Creek (6-0). These teams haven't played, although they get together for 7-on-7 drills in the summer.

If it's 7-on-7 in July, I like Pennsauken. If it's 11-on-11, full pads in November, I like Timber Creek - but not by much.

Pennsauken's offense, led by Manny Cortez and Amar Williams, against Timber Creek's defense, led by Quanzell Lambert and Greg Webb, would be something to see.

Pennsauken's offense was as good as advertised in that 42-35 loss to Camden Catholic last Friday. Timber Creek's defense might be the most physically imposing group in South Jersey.

There are spider webs between these teams, too, as Timber Creek coach Rob Hinson as well as Lambert and others have connections to the city of Camden, as do several Pennsauken players and coaches. I make the Chargers a three-point favorite. Or maybe 21/2.

No. 3 Williamstown (6-0) vs. No. 1 St. Joseph (6-0). This is a popular game on message boards and forums, mainly because there have been quite a few athletes from Monroe Township who have played for the Wildcats through the years.

Talk about two great defenses. St. Joseph features Division I ends in Kaiwan Lewis (South Carolina) and Max Valles (Virginia) plus a bunch of other guys who are always in position, always fighting off blocks, and always making tackles.

Williamstown's defense has guys who close like hungry cats. Fidel Okoye is tough to block inside, and Buddy Brown, Rashon Pleasents, and Marcus Riley cover a lot of ground on the outside.

It's tough to pick against St Joseph. The Wildcats always seem to find a way. But this would be some game. Make it St. Joseph by a touchdown.

West Deptford (5-1) vs. No. 6 Hammonton (6-0). The Group 3 Blue Devils might be a little big and strong for the Group 2 Eagles, but this still could be a classic clash of teams with similar offenses literally grounded in the old Delaware wing-T.

West Deptford coach Clyde Folsom and Hammonton coach Pete Lancetta worked together at Bishop Eustace in the 1980s. They have built the same kind of program, with tough kids who make the commitment during an extensive off-season of weight training and practice workouts.

Both teams might be even better next year. This year, I make the Blue Devils a touchdown favorite based on their size, strength, and the hard edge developed by the weekly demands of their schedule.

No. 9 Moorestown (4-2) vs. Pennsville (6-0). This wouldn't be a high-powered clash of top teams. But it would feature two offenses that run the no-huddle spread and pass like Boise State.

Neither is exactly a defensive powerhouse, either. That could mean a video game-like explosion of offense led by Moorestown senior quarterback Andrew Lisa and Pennsville sophomore quarterback Dylan Cummings.

I would like the Quakers a lot in this game - Group 3 against Group 1, and Moorestown does have some top athletes on defense - but I could see these guys going back and forth, especially in good weather.

Make Moorestown a 12-point favorite - say, 40-28.
