Andrew Bailey is encouraged by the response to his first local fund-raising event.

The Paul VI graduate and two-time all-star relief pitcher for the Oakland A's will hold the Bailey Bowl on Jan. 7 at Pennsauken's Pinsetters Bowl & Bar. The evening will include bowling and dining, a silent auction, and the chance to mingle with athletes.

Proceeds from the event will go toward pediatric cancer research, with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia a main beneficiary. For details go to http:// www.strike3foundation.org.

Bailey said a total of 26 lanes, with six people playing on each, have already been sold.

Individual tickets for the event are also on sale, and sponsorship opportunities are still available.

"It's been going great and I'm excited," Bailey said by phone.

Among the auction items are a Bon Jovi signed guitar and baseball memorabilia from Phillies such as Ryan Howard and Shane Victorino, to name a few.

"The Phillies have been great," Bailey said.

During this offseason Bailey has concentrated on putting together this event and completing his workouts.

According to Bailey, both the offseason workouts and the preparation for his charitable event are going fine.

"I am really encouraged," he said. "We hope to make a final push after the holidays."
