S. Jersey Boys: Sandoval's basket carries Absegami

Richie Sandoval's basket with 33 seconds left in regulation put Absegami ahead to stay, as the Braves rallied to upend Montgomery Blair (Md.), 58-57, in the George Betz Bracket boys' basketball championship of the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood.

Sandoval capped his 15-point performance with a late free throw, allowing Absegami to survive a three-pointer at the final buzzer.

Lamar Monroe led all scorers with 19 points while Jaleel Christmon chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Braves, who trailed by eight in the final period.

In the semifinals of the Frank McAlamen Bracket of the Boardwalk Classic, Rasheen Ellis' free throw with six seconds remaining enabled Cherokee to hold off Penns Grove, 41-40.

Conor Kelly had 16 points and Kevin Wixted added seven points and seven rebounds for the Chiefs. Ge'Shawn Davis (18 points) fueled a 25-10 fourth-quarter run by Penns Grove.

Prime Time. Tariq Jett picked up 10 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, including a go-ahead foul shot with one minute left, as Rancocas Valley escaped with a 63-62 come-from-behind win over West Windsor-Plainsboro South in the Carmen Nitti Flight at Trenton Catholic.

Colt Classic. Melvin Allen drove the length of the court in 4.4 seconds and laid in the winning basket at the buzzer, lifting Schalick over host Cumberland, 49-48.

Aaron Cox tossed in 18 points for Millville, which took command with a 37-10 game-opening blitz and went on to slam Salem, 74-33.

Lenape Board 34 Showcase. Mike Lacatena buried four shots from beyond the arc in scoring 26 and Robby DePersia added 16 points, as Haddonfield wiped out an early deficit with a 37-14 surge over the second and third quarters to conquer Kingsway, 74-44.

Host Lenape received scoring from 10 players - led by Avery Brown's 10 points - in rolling over Highland, 54-30.

Delran Tournament. Malcolm Mason led a long-range assault with 19 points and Aston Austin came through with 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, powering Pemberton past Princeton Day, 70-57.

Alex Irvin led the way with 17 points as Northern Burlington reeled off an 18-10 game-ending run to put away host Delran, 50-43.

Woodstown Tournament. Brian Lukacsy tossed in 17 points and dealt six assists to lead Clearview to a 65-38 rout of Gateway.

Warrior Classic. Tyler Barnes (20 points, 9 rebounds) went 9 for 9 from the foul line in the second half, and Reid Anderson capped his career-high nine-point effort by sinking the winning bucket with 2.8 seconds to go, sending host New Egypt into the championship game with a 48-47 triumph over Keyport.

Kennedy Chukwuocha posted a double-double, finishing with 20 points and a dozen rebounds, and Elijah Cain pumped in 13 of his 20 points down the stretch to help Medford Tech close out Lindenwold, 71-57. Cruize Rainey had a game-high 24 points for the Lions.

Hammonton's Phil Bakuckas won his weight class for the fourth straight year and went home with the Outstanding Wrestler award from the Overbrook Tournament.

Bakuckas captured the 160-pound title, but the Blue Devils finished second in the team scoring in the nine-school competition. Woodstown, sparked by wins from Dylan Weiss at 138 pounds and Pat McCurdy at 145, posted 201 points and Hammonton had 196.5.

Nonleague. Ronald Mestichelli posted the quickest of Clearview's five pins, flattening his opponent at 113 pounds in 58 seconds, and Nick Cornew added a 4-2 decision at 220 to highlight the Pioneers' 57-18 romp past visiting Holy Spirit.
