Brian Sarcinello came off the Marple Newtown bench to hit three straight three-point shots midway through the first half and help beat Bishop Shanahan, 59-31, in the championship game of the Marple Newtown basketball tournament Thursday.
The Tigers' defense allowed just 11 second-half points, while tournament MVP Andrew Brandt was a strong force inside with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocked shots. All-tournament pick Ryan Furst (13 points) scored nine points in a decisive 20-8 third quarter.
Austin Fisher poured in 13 points and grabbed 18 boards as Delco Christian topped Phoenixville, 61-53, in the consolation. Austin Stephens chipped in on the glass with eight defensive rebounds.
Jameer Nelson philly.com/Rally Classic. Wissahickon's Tanoh Kpassagnon made one of two foul shots with 20 seconds left to end the scoring in the Trojans' 50-48 victory over La Salle at Plymouth Whitemarsh. Chase Wilson was the game MVP with 18 points and four three-pointers.
Sophomore guard Jordan Greene knocked down all eight of his fourth quarter foul shots as Abington Friends held off Sidwell Friends, 55-54. Greene finished with 17 points and was aided by Montana Mayfield's game-high 19 points. University of Pennsylvania recruit Jamal Lewis scored four points in the final 15 seconds as the Sidwell rally fell short.
Marcus Gilbert's effort wasn't enough as Academy of the New Church was overpowered by St. Joseph of Metuchen, 62-50. The senior forward grabbed eight rebounds, swatted five blocks and scored 26 points.
Jack Schott Tournament. Holy Ghost Prep won its own tournament, 40-39, over Conwell-Egan behind Shane Grady's 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Tim Lazorko';s six assists. Egan's Jamal Nwaniemeka was tghe MVP.
Michael McGuire, a 6-foot-3 forward, made 9 of 11 shots from the floor, grabbed 13 rebounds and snagged an all-tournament berth after leading Bristol past Masterman, 47-45, in the consolation at Holy Ghost Prep.
Boardwalk Classic. Christian Rivera's 11 points and Kyle Slawter's ball control helped Archbishop Ryan easily pass Ocean City, 52-33, in the championship of the Bill Osborn Bracket in Wildwood. Slawter navigated the point with three assists, three steals and three rebounds.
Archbishop Wood prevailed in the Dave Lewis Bracket with a 62-53 success against Pennsauken. Wood made 26 of 32 foul shots, including 13 of 14 by Pat Smith (25).
Communications Tech finished third in the Dave Lewis Bracket with a 54-49 win over Oakcrest that featured Richard Hoskins' 14 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Penncrest Tournament. Chas McCormick grabbed the MVP award after scoring 12 points for West Chester Henderson in a 35-31 championship struggle against the host Lions.
Downingtown West Tournament. Helped by 26-for-30 foul shooting and Matt Maguire's 20 points, Downingtown West topped Strath Haven, 45-32, in the title game.
Lenape Showcase. Tom Pitt grabbed 10 rebounds and Steve Perpiglia dished out five assists to go with a game-high 16 points as Malvern Prep raced to a 60-36 win over Sterling.
Shooting Touch Shootout. Roman Catholic, ranked No. 6 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, dropped a 57-35 championship verdict to St. Anthony of Jersey City in the event in Boston. Roman's Shep Garner had 14 points and three assists, but the Cahillites were outrebounded by 39-16.
Alec Stavetski's 16 points were not enough as Archbishop Carroll faded late in a 49-42 loss East Boston. East Boston pulled away by outscoring Carroll, 22-13, in the fourth quarter.
Coatesville Tournament. Down by a point at halftime, West Catholic rallied to beat Spring-Ford, 51-39, in the third-place contest. Mark Perez ignited the comeback with 14 of his 25 points in the third quarter.
Benedictine Capital City Classic. Julian Moore hauled in 14 rebounds to go along with his 20 points as Germantown Academy fell to Christchurch (Va.), 61-56, in the Patriots' fifth-place game at Richmond. Moore was aided by Greg Doston's 12-point, 12-rebound effort.
Upper Dublin Cardinal Classic. Penn Charter rallied from a two-point halftime deficit to win the tournament, 61-55, over Upper Dublin. Tournament MVP Mike McGlinchey scored six fourth-quarter points, and John Moderski finished with 13 points.
Zach Dolton and Mike Hutson each poured in 15 points but Phil-Mont Christian fell to Wyomissing, 61-53, in the consolation game.
Lower Moreland Tournament. Josh Bair dropped in nine of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter as Calvary Christian rolled past Morrisville, 73-53, in the consolation game. Ricky Melendez's 23 points led Morrisville.
Mastery Charter North Tournament. John Washington's 11 rebounds and 10 points inside fueled Mastrey Charter North's 61-46 win over Philadelphia Academy Charter.
Rumson-Fair Haven Classic. Chestnut Hill's Pat Costello hit a key three-pointer in overtime as the Blue Devils clipped Emily Fisher, 57-55, in the consolation game.
Alex Oraschewsky needed four overtimes to win his 152-pound bout, 1-0, as host Haverford High cruised past Springfield (Delco), 54-19, in the Central League. Sean Patton scored a 40-second pin at 170 pounds and Pete Moore recorded a second-period fall.
